What to do with Topaz the bird, How to get to the Shiny Chest, What to do with the Shiny Key?

Topaz is a bird found on the western side of the Sacred ??? at the Emerald Grove in ACT I. Topaz is tending to a nest, with coins and a Shiny Key.

You don't need the ability to talk to animals to "get the most" out of Topaz - it's just for kicks (no pun intended).

Talking to Topaz

There's not much you can do here. All options have no real effects that matter.

"Persuasion" to move the key - no real effects. "Move to the Right", does just that... "Stop fussing", and well, Topaz stops fussing.

Kick the bird is the only one with an effect that does something. Topaz leaves the area, so you can more easily steal the key.

My thoughts? Just don't kick Topaz, man. haha. The Shiny Key is easy enough to steal with Topaz "guarding" it. Try out the other conversation options for fun, or simply don't interact with Topaz at all.

How to get the Shiny Key?

There's no way around it - you gotta steal it. You only get caught if you're seen. Attempt to hide by pressing C. The red areas are sightlines. If you're in no sightline - you're free to pick up the Shiny Key.

Wait till Topaz is looking away, or talk to Topaz with your non-stealing character, then switch character (using the lower left button while in dialogue) to your stealing character and pick it up. But, yeah, just time it right and you can just snatch it off the ground. Tuning of Turn-Based mode helps with situations like these! Try it out!

Where do you use the Shiny Key? The Shiny Key is for the Shiny Chest, if you must ask. Can't find it? Try pressing O for Tactical View. The Shiny Chest is on the "right" pillar area. Way up.

Need a distraction? Cast something like Minor Illusion! Haha.

How to get to the Shiny Chest?

Again, the Shiny Chest is way up there... how do you get to it? Well - you don't. The easiest way is for the Shiny Chest to come to YOU.

Use Lae'zel to cast the Githyanki version of Mage Hand. Summon it near the chest on top! From there, right click the chest and "Throw" it down to the ground. Then, while no ones looking (C to hide), unlock the chest with the Shiny Key!

Aside from Mage Hand: Other ways to reach the Shiny Chest?

• Stack a bunch of boxes and objects to make stairs.
• Get a godlike Jump modifier using spells, and try reaching it! Laezel has such a spell at L3 IIRC.
• Possibly jumping DOWNWARDS from up top? Haven't tried it.
• Telekinesis, but that's a high level spell.

Interesting, right? BG3 gives us many ways to interact with problems!

Summary and Closing

This whole sequence is a great introduction on different ways to solve problems in BG3, and the tools you have to do it. Stealing, Sight Lines, Stealth, Object Manipulation, Tactical View... The Topaz + Shiny Key + Shiny Chest scenario is super well designed IMO, loved it!
