Constitution Stat Guide

Info on the Constitution stat in Baldurs Gate 3, what it does, what it affects.

If you're here, you're curious about what exactly Constitution does in BG3. Constitution is one of the Primary Stats - formally called "Abilities" in BG3. Commonly Constitution is abbreviated as CON. Like all stats, they have various effects to your character in and out of combat.

Constitution Effects in BG3

Constitution Modifier: Like all other stats, Constitution has a modifier based on how much CON you have. Having 8 CON means you have a -1 Modifier (penalty). 10 is neutral, meaning you get a +0 CON modifier. Then for every 2 you have after 10 gives you another +1 to your Constitution modifier.

Constitution has NO RELATED SKILLS. Maybe because every class can use it? Haha.

Maximum HP

The primary reason any character would want CON, hands down.

Every class has its own unique scaling with HP and CON. For example, a Barbarian

Concentration Saving Throws

This deserves a special mention. A lot of spells (usually buffs and debuffs) require you to make a Concentration Saving Throw, which benefits from your CON modifier. Obviously the more CON you have, the better your chances at keeping these effects active.

Constitution Saving Throws

Every stat has a saving throw. The myriad actions and effects in BG3 which require you to "save" to either blunt or cancel out the effect are typically based on stats. Constitution is no different.

Summary and Closing

Everyone wants some measure of Constitution, unless you enjoy being as sturdy as a wet tissue. Most classes want at least 14 from the get go, and many will go as high as 16 from character creation. HP is HP, and you can't do jack when you're dead! Spellcasters double benefit from CON due to Concentration Saving Throws.
