Strength Stat Guide
Info on the Strength stat in Baldurs Gate 3, what it does, what it affects.
If you're here, you're curious about what exactly Strength does in BG3. Strength is one of the Primary Stats - formally called "Abilities" in BG3. Commonly Strength is abbreviated as STR. Like all stats, they have various effects to your character in and out of combat.
Strength Effects in BG3
Strength Modifier: Like all other stats, Strength has a modifier based on how much STR you have. Having 8 STR means you have a -1 Modifier (penalty). 10 is neutral, meaning you get a +0 STR modifier. Then for every 2 you have after 10 gives you another +1 to your Strength modifier.
Strength Based Weapons
Any non-Finesse, non-ranged weapon will usually benefit from Strength. Your Strength Modifier is added to both your Attack Rolls (Chance to hit), and Damage Rolls (How much damage you do).
Heavy Armor Requirements
For the higher end of Heavy Armor, you'll need 13, 14 or 15 STR. These armors usually
Throwing
How heavy of an object, and how far you can throw it are determined by Strength. You also deal more damage with throw-like attacks, adding your Strength modifier to both the attack and damage rolls (hit chance, damage done). This includes Shove distance as well.
Jump Distance
Base Jumping distance is based on your Strength as well in BG3.
Skills that rely on Strength
Most skill checks are affected by a specific modifier. In the case of Strength Modifiers:
- Athletics: Helps against being pushed or shoved, and helps with physical checks.
When performing these skills checks, your STR Modifier is added to your roll.
Most skills are non-combat, but Athletics actually helps a little here and there with most "repositioning" skills. Strength doesn't have any other skills related to it.
Strength Saving Throws
Every stat has a saving throw. The myriad actions and effects in BG3 which require you to "save" to either blunt or cancel out the effect are typically based on stats. Strength is no different. Whenever you would make a STR saving throw, your Strength Modifier is added to it.
Summary and Closing
Strength in BG3 is a solid stat for anyone who wants to wear Heavy Armor, and use "heavy" (non-finesse) weaponry. The boost to Jump is great for positioning in combat. Any Throwing build would like STR too. While not too hot in the skills department, it's a stat that many melee types can benefit from.
