Hey guys! Welcome to our Necromancer Leveling Guide! If you need to reach max level Necro (without being PL’d) – look no further! Bring out your skelies and let’s get to 70 fast!

I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU OPEN our D3 Leveling Process (all classes). It answers the usual leveling questions. “Leoric’s?” “Grinding?” There’s a ton of supplemental info there.

S28’s Altar of Rites VASTLY affects leveling

S28 is the ‘Season of Massacre Leveling’ due to Node A in Alter of Rites:
“Double massacre exp bonus and duration”.
Every other method is made worse by this. Also, Node C is “no item level requirement”…

First of all, see our Altar of Rites guide / order to get a clearer picture of what I’m talking about. Basically, this hinges around “Opening your first Challenge Rift Cache”, and if you want to take it ASAP. Also, there couple notes on Node C there, specifically how to get Node C with or without the cache.

Challenge Rift Cache woes

Every season, you should be doing the Challenge Rift, and opening the cache to get a huge boost in your leveling speed. However, this season, opening the Challenge Rift cache BLOCKS you from progressing the Altar of Rites past 15 nodes “until the next monday”  since you NEED a challenge rift cache to unlock the 15th node.

To Cache or not to Cache? To open or save?

Open?

Opening the cache makes your leveling better, no doubt as it gives you the resources to fuel the usual seasonal tricks. Not only do you get Node A (double massacre bonus and duration), you also get to craft high level items to use alongside Node C, AND the usual shenanigans with Rift Caches. It’s a wild bonus. However, you must wait “until the upcoming monday” to go further down (15+) the Altar of Rites, which is a non-issue for many. For the season start, it’s just a few days wait.

Opening is a no-brainer for relaxed players, or if you don’t really plan to nolife week 1.

You also get a considerable boost as you step into 70, as you get 1 or 2 good legendaries.

Save?

Saving the cache vastly slows your leveling speed (in comparison), but you still get the huge bonus from Node A. If you’re getting boosted? save the cache is your best bet – you simply don’t need the EXP and power boost to leveling. You DONT have to wait to completely unlock your Altar of Rites.

Saving is a no-brainer for those getting boosted, or giga-grinders for Week 1.

People forget that massacre sucks for items, and without the cache you’ll be weak at 70.

I’ll be pasting this reminder in all leveling related content. GL leveling your necro in S28!

!!! Challenge Rift Material Spending !!!

As mentioned in our general all classes leveling guide, you SHOULD be doing the Challenge Rift and WISELY be spending the resulting materials from it. TLDR: Challenge Rift -> Attempt Deaths Breath upgrade and Blood Shard gambles for a good legendary.

For a leveling Necromancer, you’re in luck. Both halves of the equation are godly.

Death’s Breath

Upgrade L70 2H Scythes. You have a 100% chance to get something godly. It could be any of these: Nayr’s, Reilena’s, Bloodtide or Maltorius. All amazing.

Blood Shards

Gamble on Gloves at Level 1 to 15. The only possible legendary is Grasps of Essence, which is for Corpse Explosion. It’s crazy cause you can get a 2H Scythe that works with it!

Necromancer Leveling: FULL BUILD per Level

This build is not SUPER optimized for MASSACRE (S28, you should be doing it)|
but it doesn’t need to be, given how easy it is to level.

Put your level in the box on the upper right – or hit back / next found in the bottom right!

Help! I can't use those skills because they're from the same category! Turn On Elective Mode

If you’re not allowed to put two skills on your bar because they’re from the same category – FEAR NOT! This isn’t a bug or a permanent in-game restriction. You simply have to CHECK ON ELECTIVE MODE, via Esc > Options > Gameplay > Elective Mode!

Binding Force Move to Mousewheel up & down is a value change that every player should make IMO. It prevents misclicks and skill misfires, and forces you to move to where otherwise an enemy might be.

Necromancer Leveling & Leoric’s Crown – When, and is it worth it?

Review our D3 Leveling Process (all classes) for more notes on this. Summary:

Still worth it || You must be minimum L14 (so you have max minions out)
You must beat him in Campaign Mode | You must not have beaten him previously

Since Necromancer does not get a true mobility skill until L30, the L10 passive Fueled by Death should suffice. I dislike doing this straight out of the gate (if solo) as it’s generally not worth the slow pace reaching Leoric.

I like to do it after “some time has passed” to “take a break” so to speak. Do this on easy if you feel really weak.

Necromancer: Leveling Notes

Playing the Build

“Nova Nova Nova, Lance Fatties, Devour, Move, Repeat”

Bone Spikes – Is only here because you NEVER WANT TO BE “STUCK” WITHOUT ESSENCE. The fact that it does damage if simply a “bonus”, lol.

Corpse Lance – use this to ERASE elites. A couple of Corpse Lances should do the trick. Blood Lance rune can even one-shot. Hell, unruned can one-shot.

Death Nova – its for those chumpy enemies, especially those surrounding you. Unstable Compound rune tags a much larger AoE.

Command Skeletons – Command them to attack those elites. They’re mainly here to protect you and provide free damage. They’re not absolutely essential and you can even use Command Golem.

Devour – Be careful not to over eagerly Devour. You always want corpses to Lance tougher enemies. Once the coast is clear of fats after the initial barrage of Nova, Devour before you leave the area.

Fighting Elites WITHOUT NEARBY CORPSES IS A BAD SITUATION.

Tested this build without equipping any legendary items or gems.
Adjust the build to fit in any legendaries you might pick up.

Followers – Hire them!

Hire your Templar while you level up! Templar does most of the healing for you while you trash enemies. Choose all the left skills to fully maximize Templar’s support power.

Crafted Weapons

Craft a blue 2H axe at level 8 and once you get to level 16, craft the best 2H yellow axe you can. The damage boost from this is huge. Occasionally check Blacksmith if there’s a new craftable weapon available. Don’t forget to upgrade him as soon as you can.

At level 61 it is IMPORTANT you craft a new weapon since the stat difference is gigantic compared to pre-60 weapons. Do this for your armor, too.

Necromancer: Gems while Leveling up

Topaz (yellow) gems for your armor. Try to combine them and get the highest possible gem you can upgrade.

Highest Ruby for Helm to increase your Exp gains (with Leoric’s Crown, of course) and Weapon during the leveling up phase.

Fresh 70 Necromancer, now what?

You got your Necro to 70! Yey! Get hyped since the end-game is just beginning! Just a quick reminder though, craft a level 70 armor, 2H mace for that higher base damage or 2H scythe to help you with Essence.

    • as per official D3 website, Golem unlocks at level 13. Haven’t really played necro this season so I’d really appreciate if you can provide me the correct level. Thanks!

  1. Hi there —

I found an error here, Devour on key 4, it doesn’t become available until 19, not 16. Otherwise good so far, I’ll comment again if I find any other errors.

    • If you have paragons, it means you’re 70! Haha. A Generic Paragon priority would be:

      MS > ESSENCE > INT > VIT
      CHC > CHD > CDR > AS
      ARMOR > LIFE > ALLRES > REGEN
      AD > RCR > LpH > GF

  2. Hit 30 and dropped Golem for Blood rush, a few levels later I dropped Devour for Flesh Golem again. I just found it far more useful for the extra pet and the instant corpses that came in handy now and then, far more than I was using Devour. Corpse Lance + Ricochet takes out packs fast. I Command Skeletons in on the *weakest* mob type in the pack to get a fast corpse, move them on to the next when that is dead, then start Lancing around. If for some reason I’m desperate for corpses then I just Command the Flesh Golem. Anyway, this worked faster and easier for me. Thanks for the tips though!

  3. Your Any Class S10 leveling guide is totally unusable on iPhone because it automatically redirects to a “promotefine.com” ad which does not allow you to go “back” and closes the tab. You might want to double think your ad server.

    • This issue seems to affect mobile only, and only on some geographies. We are aware of the problem and pinpointing it, we messaged our ad providers stating that “someone” posting up ads with them causes redirects. very upsetting for all…
