In case you’re curious we’re going with something modern and fun for S27:
Sanctified Magic Missle LoD transitioning into Firebird MM

In Season 27, the Wizard free set is: Tal Rasha’s Elements.

D3 Season 27 Lights Calling and YOU. How does it affect?

S27’s unique mechanic is the Angelic Crucible. Here’s how it works.

A seasonal random consumable item (Angelic Crucible) has a chance to drop anywhere – kind of like a ramaladni’s gift. You can then use this item on a legendary to give it various boosts.

Here’s what sanctifying an item does to it:
– Can only be used on any legendary item (set or non set).
– Retains all of its old powers (and gains a new sanctified power – more on this later).
– Gets rerolled.
– UPGRADES the stats to primal ancient tier (perfect rolls, ancient level stats)
– Adds a SANCTIFIED POWER to any existing powers it has.

Each class has three possible sanctified powers. For Wizard:
– Magic Missle fires 10 projectiles and gains the Seeker rune.
– Storm Armor charges for 30s, recasting instantly kills a nearby enemy or massively damages elites.
– Arcane Orb now periodically spawns up to four orbiting charges that will generate an additional orb when cast. All charges from the Arcane Orbit rune now detonate at the same time.

Even if the free set, Tal Rasha, got a little bit of a rework (delseres too) – we won’t be using it for this guide. Why? I kind of want to focus on the fleeting S27 mechanics, of which Magic Missle is an exciting and decent option that can serve as a middle ground between speedfarming and tryharding. We can always try out tal rasha later on in the season, or in the next one!

For this guide we have a few couple overarching steps that dictate our plan.
– Gear up our LoD Magic Missile as our first step.
– Smash seasonal journey once youve got a mature build.
– Transition into a Firebird MM build for an option when tryharding.
– Using the base builds, have slight variations for speedier runs or tryhardy runs.

I’m just thankful I don’t have to recommend Archon for another season…

Early game Wiz Sanctified powers – a heads up

Every time you get an angelic crucible to sanctify an item, you’re gonna want to use it ASAP to boost your power levels.

What item do I sanctify? If you can, use it on a main-hand weapon. What exact weapon? Whew. A safe bet is either Fragment of Destiny or Aether Walker. Sanctifying makes into a primal ancient tier weapon.

While the sanctified power you want is Magic Missile , you can potentially use the others during your “way up”, depending on how mature your build is. Storm Armor is always useful with Halo of Karini, and you can easily temporarily add Arcane orb if you’re early on in your journey.

Step 1) Initial Build & Getting Legacy of Dreams

Don’t get stressed out, yes, LoD builds might seem a little daunting but let me tell you that it’s a fun and exciting process. Ultimately you need two things right now: The actual LoD gem, and a basic build to get you going.

The above build is meant to be in the middle of two things: Easy to edit – that hopefully game-changing legendaries can fit in no matter what. Energy Armor is the basic choice, but once you have the armor-improving rings, use either Storm or Ice (Halo of Karini / Arlyse)

Magic Missile Build Template

ONCE YOU GET FRAGMENT OF DESTINY, or enough “primary attack” buffs, change into this build:

Energy Armor is the basic choice, but once you have the armor-improving rings, use either Storm or Ice (Halo of Karini / Arlyse). This build has a lot of options, this is a pretty conservative / defensive take.

Getting Legacy of Dreams ASAP

The first three gems will always be Bane of the Powerful, Legacy of Dreams, and one random one. So thankfully, there’s no RNG there.

Get 3 rift keys → Run 3 rifts → Wear three gemstones on your gear. That’s about as simple as it gets. DO NOT try to “tryhard” the nephs and GR’s. SPEED is the key here. Get your keys on Easy if you must!

Step 2) Easy power-ups. Huge gains for little effort.

You can go all of these things “simultaneously”, basically small tasks here and there that you should keep in mind right now that will greatly increase your power for little to no effort.

Make a Reaper’s Wraps? While this build isn’t exactly hungry for Arcane Power, and actually needs NO AP once you change into Magic Missile, it’s a decent upgrade for the extreme early game. Same goes with Topaz on helm, if you need to alleviate early game resource problems.

What three Legendary gems?

Your next goal should be getting at least L25 on your three most important gems. Just get rift keys and spam GR’s until you get them, and do the absolute minimum level you need to level them up. Get them and level them quickly – do not feel pressured to “maximize” your rift keys by inflating the difficulty.

Legacy of Dreams is mandatory, as mentioned in the basics segment! Level this up as much as you can.

Since we’re going for a primary skill – Simplicity’s Strength is a shoe in.

For the third gem, it’s a toss up. Want offense? Go for a Powerful or Trapped. Defense? Esoteric, Moratorium or Gizzard.

Can’t ever go wrong with leveling up a Boon of the Hoarder for speedfarming.

Legendary Items in ALL SLOTS

LoD gets stronger with each legendary item you have equipped – so get to it! You should aim to get this done “passively” by natural item drops, but you can also craft items if you’re desperate.

Spending Blood Shards is “OK”, but only use Death’s Breath to fill up the slots if you’re absolutely desperate. You’ll get an item for each slot in no time (you can even craft them). Save your resources for finding SPECIFIC items that will greatly boost your power. We talk more about this in the next segment, refinement.

Ancients DOUBLE this bonus, and they’re a welcome boost to consider.

Defense Type & Gems

Wizards / WD’s / Necros are INTELLIGENCE classes (they get free ALLRES from INT). So, in the face of all this free allres, your prime defensive stats are ARMOR > VIT. So try to reroll Armor on your gear if you need defense – it’s your best defensive stat by FAR.

So your gemming strategy (body and legs) should be slotting your best Rubies or Emeralds, as they give Armor.

Magic Missile% is found in Legs and Belt – BUT IS NOT NECESSARY for the Firebird variant. For Element%, Arcane for LoD, Fire for Firebirds.

Basic Rerolls

Since legendaries are a little expensive to reroll EARLY ON, try to make the most by REMOVING GARBAGE STATS, and getting anything “remotely usable”. INT, VIT and Armor are welcome virtually anywhere, as they’re your best stats.

Remove useless stats

  • Life Regeneration – garbage for any build.
  • Attack Speed – it usually an endgame tune-up stat.
  • Excess Resource Cost Reduction – Is a crutch, and only niche builds need it.
  • Excess Cooldown Reduction – Only useful for an endgame “need”.
  • Unused skill% – literally USELESS.
  • All Resists – Useless for us, take Armor and VIT instead.

Take better stats

  • INT VIT– can’t go wrong with these. Your core stats!
  • ARMOR Life% Great defensive stats.
  • Sockets are essentially MANDATORY.
  • Life per Hit – Great early game sustainability.
  • CRIT Stats (CHC / CHD) – More for endgame, but I’d take this over garbage stats.
  • Skill and Elemental% – that you use.


Do not forget to fully equip your follower for farming. You can start by crafting Sage or Cain’s NOW and worry about the rest later.

You don’t really need many of these items. Fragment and Shame are the core here, along with your Legendary Gems. DO NOT USE STONE GAUNTLETS without ICE CLIMBERS!

This is a defensively slanted take on the build. You can make small adjustments here and there.

A more tryhard variant, and I suppose you can still speedfarm with it (but its extreme power is essentially wasted on normal rifting). Great for trying to push, and gives you a secondary goal / build to transition to.


Obviously we’re after the Magic Missile one. Also, you really really want to sanctify a main-hand weapon since you’re it upgrades into a primal ancient tier item – it’s a godly boost to power. Fragment of Destiny or Aether Walker make great candidates.

As for the other powers, like I mentioned before, they’re just fillers for when your build still isn’t up. Storm Armor is acceptable, but Arcane Orb gets useless fast.

Get CORE ITEMS asap. The heart of your build

The absolute core of your build are these: Fragment of Destiny – 1h Wand, Shame of Delsere – Belt. I’d say the Legendary Gem Simplicity’s Strength is a core part too.

To a lesser extent: and Depth Diggers – Legs, and for defenses Ashnagarr’s Blood Bracer – Bracer + Halo of Karini – Ring.

Spending Blood Shards and Death’s Breath

Blood ShardsDeaths BreathRings, amulets

Here’s advice on how to spend your blood shards with Kadala, roughly in order of importance:

Shame of Delsere – Belt adds even more attack speed to MM. You can also get stuff like Goldwrap here.

Stone Gauntlets – Glove, Ice Climbers – Boots: A solid defensive pair that MUST BE USED WITH ONE ANOTHER. Specifically do not use the gloves without the boots…

These items are the only ones that overlap between the two build templates.
Whatever you chase for next only works for the LoD variant and
depends on wether you need DPS or defense.

Ashnagarrs Blood and Nemesis – Bracer: Great defensive boost, and Nemesis can be used on your follower.

Mirrorball – Source and Depth Diggers – Legs: Generic DPS boost to primary skills.

Crown of the Primus – An overall boost to defense, and gives some ASPD.

Aquila Cuirass – Chest: Basic defenses for you build that doesn’t really use AP.

Use this to fill up your Legendary Dreams spots, and also
youll get pieces of the Firebird set here and there while doing this process.

Here’s advice on how to get your weapons from Deaths Breath rare item upgrades (Kanai’s Cube Recipe: 25x Deaths Breath convert a rare into random legendary of same type), roughly in order of importance:

1h Wand for Fragment of Destiny is your most important drop. Aether Walker is here too.

The Furnace from 2H Mace is probably next.

Nothing else is really WORTH spending DB’s for, and would rather spend to try and get jewelry you might not have yet. Aether Walker, In-geom and all that are nice, but not that important yet.

Rings and Amulets are tough to get from either BS or DB’s (due to the large amount of possible outcomes), but if you’re done getting your core items from these currencies – and you haven’t got your core accessories, it’s a viable way to spend them. Typically you’ll just find these as you grind – then use currency if you’re desperate. Anyway, if I had to rank the importance of your rings and ammys…

Halo of Karini is an ULTRA powerful defensive buff that needs a little work.

Unity is a decent defensive option, but you need the follower immortality relic, and another Unity for the follower!

Convention of Elements, and Compass Rose are great drops that aren’t too critical right now.

Halo of Arlyse can be used, instead of Karini if you like…

For amulets? Hellfire, Squirts, and Traveler’s Pledge are pretty much the only ones you’ll use.

As an aside – Ring of Royal Grandeur and Avarice Band are BOUNTY ONLY rings (respectively ACT I and III), which DO NOT APPEAR FROM any other source. They, like any other bounty item, DO NOT DROP from monsters, gambling, upgrades or any other source outside of their respective BOUNTY CACHE.

Follower Gear odds and ends

More of a reminder than anything, once you start farming you will be running into those little bonuses for your follower farming build. Keep an eye out!

Summary & Outro

Welp, that’s about it. Everyone loves a good ol high power season. And in case you missed it, the Echoing Nightmare mechanic is here to stay (whew). From here, you can easily do the Seasonal Journey if that’s your thing, or transition into literally any other build you like – the it’s exactly what the S27 fresh 70 LoD builds for each class are made for.

  1. I hit level 70, got the 4 piece vyrs, now just struggling with rifts.. i cant even do torment 1, it takes like 10 minutes. even when i’m in arcon 90% of the time. Any tips?

    What weapon should I go be using for the rifts? Should I just craft yellows for the other pieces?

    • Simply turn down the rift difficulty… you have no reason to “stay” in Vyr’s 4. Focus on clearing the seasonal journey ASAP using the minimum difficulty.

      In archon 90% of the time but struggling? That’s… somethings not adding up here hehe.

  2. Is there a suggestion for paragon points?
    Like for example:
    Basis: Movement > INT
    Off: Crit Ch > Crit DMG > Att Speed
    Def: Life Reg > AllRes > Life
    Adventure: LpH > Area DMG > Resource ?

    • we really need to put that in our guides, right? anyway here it is: MS > INT > Resource optional > VIT as needed; CHC CHD CDR AS; Armor Life% Allres Regen; LpH AD RCR GF (LpH is lower if you have good sustain)

  3. which fire skills do you recommend for a 6p firebird set and etched sigil+death wish pair? hydra as damaging skill or another big damaging fire based skill? my deathwish does +fire damage.

    I’ve been following this guide for about a week now and compared to “competitors” builds, I find this one the most enjoyable. But I’ve seen to hit a rough spot, and I’m stuck hovering between T5-T7. Unfortunately I didn’t come accross this guide until I already progressed a little bit so my rolls aren’t perfect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.


    • Well that would first depend on your personal goals. If you’re “stuck”, you should first find out where you’re progressing. What do you envision it is your goal this season would be? The free set is meant to be a free set, and you don’t need to STICK with it to the end – the build entailed in the fresh 70 guide will help you along to reach to “point of freedom”.
