Hi and thanks for checking out our Witch Doctor Leveling guide! WD’s are EXTREMELY powerful while leveling up! This will pose no challenge whatsoever. WD’s can do any leveling method – I guess mix it up to prevent boredom!

I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU OPEN our D3 Leveling Process (all classes). It answers the usual leveling questions. “Leoric’s?” “Grinding?” There’s a ton of supplemental info there.

S28’s Altar of Rites VASTLY affects leveling

S28 is the ‘Season of Massacre Leveling’ due to Node A in Alter of Rites:
“Double massacre exp bonus and duration”.
Every other method is made worse by this. Also, Node C is “no item level requirement”…

First of all, see our Altar of Rites guide / order to get a clearer picture of what I’m talking about. Basically, this hinges around “Opening your first Challenge Rift Cache”, and if you want to take it ASAP. Also, there couple notes on Node C there, specifically how to get Node C with or without the cache.

!!! Challenge Rift Material Spending !!!

As mentioned in our general all classes leveling guide, you SHOULD be doing the Challenge Rift and WISELY be spending the resulting materials from it. TLDR: Challenge Rift -> Attempt Deaths Breath upgrade and Blood Shard gambles for a good legendary.

For a leveling WD the chances are BAD, but you don’t really need is as the leveling process for WD is insanely easy and OP.

Death’s Breath

Upgrade Ceremonial Mask for a 33% chance of something usable. Carnevil, Jeram, and Quetzalcoatl are direct upgrades to our build.

Blood Shards

Gamble for Mojo at L1 for Gazing Demise. It’s the only possible low level Mojo. It’s a decent upgrade and can help you out push the difficulty levels, though you might have to edit your build quite a bit…

Ultimately WD doesn’t really need to do this, but why not, right?

Witch Doctor Leveling: FULL BUILD per Level

This build is not SUPER optimized for MASSACRE (S28, you should be doing it)|
but it doesn’t need to be, given how easy it is to level.

Put your level in the box on the upper right – or hit back / next found in the bottom right!

Simple rune changes can cover your needs for defense or offense – mainly in Haunt, Swarm, Dogs, and Soul Harvest (nearly the whole build…) WD’s are OP leveling up!

Witch Doctor Leveling & Leoric’s Crown – When, and is it worth it?

Review our D3 Leveling Process (all classes) for more notes on this. Summary:

Still worth it || You must be minimum L16 (to be safe)
You must beat him in Campaign Mode || You must not have beaten him previously

WD is so stupidly OP leveling up that you don’t REALLY need it. However, if you’re newer or wanna relax taking the “Detour” to Leoric’s Crown is a nice change of pace, pays off!

I would suggest no earlier than L23. Why? Gargantuan-Humongoid comes out at 22, Haunt-Resentful Spirits come out at 23. This completes your AFKLOLSTOMP build, so you can even INCREASE the difficulty when restarting in campaign mode! Fit in Horrify-Stalker for added speed, likely replacing Locust Swarm.

Why wait? I dislike opening your seasonal by campaigning and ditching before Leoric. It’s TERRIBLY SLOW without skills to help you travel WHILE killing.

Playing the Build

Weather it’s nephs, bounties, campaigns, or anything – you DO NOT need to make any major build adjustments. That’s how brainlessly powerful this build is.

Summon all your chumps – spam Haunt and Locust Spawn. That’s IT. That’s 100% of the build in a nutshell. The basic attack recommended, Poison Dart-Splinters? It’s COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, and you can try any other skill in its place!

All adjustments to the build are purely fixable with a few rune and passive changes

• Haunt – Consuming Spirit for defense, Poisoned Spirit for more damage.
• Soul Harvest – Siphon, Languish for more defense, Vengeful Spirit for more damage.
• Fierce Loyalty or Zombie Handler for toughness

Witch Doctors are probably the best candidate for increasing difficulty above Hard while leveling up. This build is strong, mobile and SAFE. Can’t ask for anything more!

Followers – Hire them!

When soloing, make sure to hire Templar. Takes care of healing and gives a bit of Mana Regen, and CC – never sad to have those.

Crafted Yellow Weapons

Craft the best 2H Axe you can! Typically starts at 8 and and the yellows come out at 16. Upgrade your Blacksmith as you go along! This is a huge DPS increase for zero effort. At level 61 its notable that the stats JUMP so craft another 2H Axe (and other armor optionally) once you hit 61.

This applies for any armor piece you may have that’s really under your current level. Just an advanced reminder – at 70 craft the only 2H Mace.

Witch Doctor: Gems while Leveling up

Red gems (Ruby) should be slotted into your WEAPON and HELM at all times whenever a socket is open, giving +DMG / +EXP% respectively. Combine them when you can.

Yellow Gems (Topaz) for +Intelligence (Damage for Witch Doctors) go into any other socket you may have on ALL OTHER ITEMS (non-helm, non-weapon).
