So you’ve leveled enough corpses to get Necro Fresh 70, ey? You want to get the Necro Free Set this season? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Get Haedrig’s gift ASAP. Here you’ll find builds and protips EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.
In Season 16, Necro free set is Trag’Oul’s Avatar.
It is also the SEASON OF GRANDEUR – meaning all characters have the effects of
Ring of Royal Grandeur applied!
It doesn’t affect your leveling process or “early process” of being level 70. The free RoRG effect only really takes place once you have 3/5/6+ of a set – with heavy implications on full end-game builds.
This guide is not about that, but I can give you a heads up about this seasons effects.
There are two possible outcomes of a free RoRG in any build.
- You have space for a filler item. Builds that DO NOT USE OR NEED RoRG simply gain a space for ONE MORE LEGENDARY EFFECT. This is the “minimum” effect of this season, but should not be underestimated. Any build can benefit from, for example, Aquila Cuirass or Nemesis Bracer.
- You gain an accessory slot. Builds that NATURALLY NEED RoRG will open up a space for another accessory. Usually resulting in the addition of CoE and/or Zodiac in your build which is ALWAYS ABSURDLY POWERFUL.
Ideally, something absolutely broken happens. I can’t account for every possibility because the community always surprises me – but one thing’s for sure… the effects of season of grandeur can be condensed into one of those two scenarios.
Click below to reveal the instructions you need for each step:
Since Trag’Oul’s set is garbage pre 6 piece, you will need A LITTLE EXTRA CARE in your journey leading up to the free set, we will be leveraging the Thorns “CHEESE” build. Fret not, rolling thorns on yellows is super easy.
Any time you’re able to beat any Torment-level Malthael you gain the Reaper’s Wraps schematic – craft it for a large boost in the early game!
|Season 16 Trag’Oul’s Full Free Set Build|
|Skill & Rune|
|Bone Spike (OPEN)||Blood Spikes|
|Death Nova||Blood Nova|
|Corpse Lance||Blood Lance|
|Blood Rush||All active|
|Devour (Frailty)||Satiated (Aura of Frailty)|
|Command Golem (OPEN!!)||Flesh Golem (OPEN!)|
|Dark Reaping||Stand Alone|
|Life from Death||Blood for Blood|
This is an “open” build which can use any skill that costs life (which is then modified by our 6 piece bonus). Just so you know let me list the commonly used life skills here:
|Death Nova||Blood Nova||Recommended|
|Corpse Lance||Blood Lance||Godlike anti-elite|
|Skeletal Mage||Life Support||Fuels Corpse Lance!|
|Bone Spear||Blood Spear||Garbage…|
The recommended build above contains the most CORPSE and ESSENCE crutches. The more adept you are at the Necro playstyle (or getting certain drops to alleviate these problems), editing the build to reduce these crutches can yield SIGNIFICANT power spikes.
A quick review before proceeding…
FROM HERE OUR GOAL IS TO GAIN POWER FAST. The next logical steps are Legendary Gems, and being mindful of the Chase Items you need to find.
Keep these important things in mind as you progress!
Now we have to gain as much power, as quickly as possible.
This is the easiest way to gain power simply because acquiring them has little to no RNG. Getting 3 of your best gems will increase your power dramatically in a short time span.
Click on the tabs to see Trag’Oul’s “Big 3” gems and “others”.
Get these three to L25 ASAP:
Bane of the Powerful is a great gem for the early game. The good thing is, it’s the first legendary gem to drop from GRs. Its power maxes out at 25, and will serve you for a long time yet.
Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard is arguably the most important gem for you this early on. Killing yourself, or going too low is a REAL RISK with Trag’Oul’s. This gem mitigates a bunch of that risk. You can level it up as much as you want (maybe as your second priority gem), and use it for augments later. I, personally, love keeping a high level Gizzard in my stash :)!
Moratorium is pretty godlike in the early game. Combined with Gizzard and Trag’Oul’s self-healing, it’s a great source of DEFENSE. It practically caps at L25 so it’s great early on with minimal investment and just chuck it for augments later. For a more future-proof investment, Esoteric Alteration is the late-game defensive gem of choice.
Bane of the Trapped makes a lot of sense since we’re going for Death Nova. Most enemies will be in range for it to trigger from the L25 Trapped effect. Personally, I don’t think you need the extra DPS this early and I would rather invest into a defensive gem.
Any other gems worth it?
Bane of the Stricken is absolutely necessary in the LATE GAME for almost any build.
Esoteric Alteration is the late game defensive gem of choice.
Collect those legendary gems mentioned above and level them up to at least level 25. This shouldn’t be so hard as you only need GR34 to get one legendary gem to 25!
With 3 of your best gems at L25 – try higher Torment levels. So now the real farming begins… and likely, the defense problems begin, too.
Playing the Build & Adjustments
Now that you have the base “power level” of your 6 set and gems, let’s take a short time to review How to Play the Build. Here’s some basic tips for playing Trag’Oul’s 6.
Also, as you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.
Here we discuss Playstyle Notes and build Build Adjustments.
Ultimately, the build is very open to adjustment.
You can go “no generator” or generate more corpses for bosses/elites.
There’s a lot you can do.
Command Golem is “optional”, its only purpose is to easily generate corpses for you. Feel free to change it up.
Your 4pc defensive bonus should always be maxed out by your various skills. In a pinch, you can use Blood Rushes oft forgotten self-heal (by passing thru a guy) to maintain it.
Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.
Spreading Malediction is an amazing DPS passive that you should be aware of. It, of course, loses a lot of value if you’re not constantly fighting a clump of guys. Early on is all about farming speed, so this isn’t super useful. However, it’s one of the prime DPS evolutions, so keep it in mind.
Frailty should find its way into the build when tackling harder content, or once your build matures. The suggestion in the build table above is to loosely sub it out for Devour, which is only a rule I follow in tougher GR’s.
Speaking of Essence Generation…
Dark Reaping is great for any type of content you face roll. Free essence and life as you roll through things is good, I hear. This drops off sharply as you challenge extremely chunky enemies or bosses.
Devour-Devouring Aura is a mega tool you should always be aware of. It can COMPLETELY REPLACE YOUR GENERATOR as long as you have a constant stream of BODIES. Of course, the harder the content, the less value this is.
Aside from the above, most other essence generation alternatives are a bit narrow.
More defense needed?
Defense is primarily thought of as self-healing and damage reduction.
Self-healing is an integral part of Trag’Oul’s early game!
The recommended passive combo we’re packing up there takes care of a lot of BS. Dark Reaping + Life from Death + Blood for Blood is a super synergistic kit to keep you going. Draw Life could potentially be abused with Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard, lol.
Necro has a smattering of other Life-Healing skills, but they’re not so notable.
== Pet based healing is powerful, if you can fit Command Skeleton in your build ==
Command Skeletons-Dark Mending: It’s a great choice for a default rune for obvious reasons. Percent based max HP healing is no joke, given the amount of health we burn through. It makes fighting rift guardians much much safer as you’re given a constant stream of HP.
Fueled by Death is the best “easy to slot in” mobility change for Necro.
Decrepify-Opportunist is GREAT FOR BOUNTIES, but not much else as I think you lose the bonus when they die. Just curse guys and run!
Ultimately, I can only do so much to guide you. More so in the case of Trag’Oul’s, every item drop and content type changes your needs. How well you can get a feel for these evolutions will be integral to your power, and I daresay your growth as a player.
Items to look for
Now that legendary gems are wrapped up (the easy part…), it’s time for the ENDLESS grind for the perfect items!
Using Blood Shards:
Belts for Dayntee’s Binding is probably the strongest possible drop for you right now. It’s a very flexible and you can choose “more defense” or “more offense” build flexibility by choosing between Decrepify or Frailty.
Oddly, there’s not much else that we “specifically want”
Shoulders for Corpsewhisper Pauldrons is a pretty solid evolution. You don’t really need it unless you’re going for tougher GR’s, but it’s great to keep in mind.
Again reminding you of the bounty rings:
Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:
2H Scythes for Reilenna’s Shadowhook is what you want here for good ‘ol passive bonus damage that works with anything. Aside from this we also get Bloodtide Blade which boosts our main skill, Death Nova.
Here’s a sample of what you can equip:
|Cycle||Any||Fang||OK – preferable 2H mainhand|
|Cycle||Any||Shadowhook||OK – preferable 2H mainhand|
|Cycle||Any||Bloodtide||OK – preferable 2H mainhand|
|Fang||Any||Cycle||OK – preferable 2H mainhand|
|Fang||Any||Shadowhook||OK – preferable 2H mainhand|
|Fang||Any||Bloodtide||OK – preferable 2H mainhand|
As you can see any setup is OK! The power level of your off-hand Phylactery greatly determines how good the bottom half of the setups are (1h+offhand).
The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.
Ring of Royal Grandeur – You can get this form Act I bounties. Use it to break your set for a temporary filler item! Free this season lul.
Convention of Elements – A generic DPS ring that’s amazing paired with other cooldowns. Most builds can get a kick out of this.
Unity – Put it on your undying Follower and yourself for 50% DR. Value.
Reaper’s Wraps: this isn’t so bad to have early on since this would greatly help with our Essence regen. You’ll get the recipe from Malthael.
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac: a must have for those long ass cooldown skills!
So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

Trag’Oul’s takes a while to get rolling but it’s not a bad set. You can easily transition to any set you like once you can speedfarm 8/10 and beyond efficiently.
