So you’ve leveled enough corpses to get Necro Fresh 70, ey? You want to get the Necro Free Set this season? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Get Haedrig’s gift ASAP. Here you’ll find builds and protips EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

In Season 20, Necro free set is Trag’Oul’s Avatar.

It is also the SEASON OF THE FORBIDDEN ARCHIVES.
You can freely cube any three items (IE:3 weapons, 2 armors and a ring).
Instead of being forced to use one weapon, armor, and jewelry.

How does Season of the Forbidden Archives affect me?

In General...

In your journey to powering up, it mildly helps you since you can cube your “three best things” to help you fill out your build. This is quite a potent effect to help your growth snowball out of control. It is heavily affected by your luck, though.

As for the endgame? This is not the scope of this guide but I may put some notes on unusual cube combinations for each seasonal free set.

Fresh 70 Necromancer: Getting the Free Set!

Any time you’re able to beat any Torment-level Malthael you gain the Reaper’s Wraps schematic – craft it for a large boost in the early game!

Since Trag’Oul’s set is garbage pre 6 piece, you will need “SOME HELP” in your journey leading up to the free set, I will give you two options to cheese GR20 (which will be your main roadblock) if you don’t get any good drops.

Cheese 1: Crafted Medley

This method depends on how lucky you are looting the crafting plans. You only really need ONE of these sets to “win”. Heck, you can even combine it with Cheese method 2.

As the name implies this cheese method is super simple. Craft the following items:

The objective of this method is simple. Beef up your stats in the most “generic” way possible to help you faceroll the seasonal journey.

Don’t worry about breaking Trag’Oul’s 2/4 set bonuses.
They’re pretty bad.

Cheese 2: Thorns Items

This tab can be a bit more meticulous than the previous one, but some people prefer it. The resulting build is pretty good.

The info in this tab should be kept in mind as a “sidequest” as you go along your journey. Basically, you must craft/fix/pickup a certain number of yellow items with the THORNS SECONDARY STAT.

You NEED Thorns items to muscle through the Torment IV entries and the final GR20 before getting your 6 piece (Hell, even the TII boss may pose a challenge raw).

The following item slots would be great:

1h Scythe – Ideally INT, Life per Hit, Socket. VIT luxury. The socket is for your best TOPAZ for +Thorns damage. The better your Topaz, the easier this is gonna be.

Phylactery (Offhand, can actually roll Thorns Secondary)
Chest, Legs (Thorns Secondary)
Rings (Thorns Secondary)
Belt (Thorns Secondary)

Amulet and Bracer: Physical% (and Thorns) is a HUGE BOOST. Even if you don’t roll thorns on these, the possible 30%+ Physical Damage modifier is TITANIC in your journey leading up to the 6 piece set. You typically even use the Physical after anyway.

Optionally, you can gather Shoulder, Boots, Gloves, and Helm with Thorns. It’s not a big deal if you don’t get it on those slots though.

For the love of god, if you do not want to rely on RNG legendary drops – you NEED to follow one of the cheese methods above. It’s well worth the hassle.

That aside, click below for instructions on each step in seasonal journey:

IMPORTANT: Setting up!

NECRO NEEDS ARMOR – REMOVE ALLRES!

Why Armor? Necromancer is an INT character, meaning they gain +Damage and +Resists from Intelligence. INT characters DO NOT GAIN ARMOR NATURALLY, so stacking Armor on your gear will yield a larger defensive gain.

As a Fresh 70 Necromancer, yellow items are more than enough to help you complete the seasonal journey. You just need to remove any unnecessary stats off your looted or crafted yellow gear. Read on to know exactly the stats you should have per item.

INT and VIT should be in all of your armor pieces! Since Necro is an INT class, you’d want to have Armor in most of your gear. Ditch ALL RES and get Armor instead!

Weapon: Craft a 2H Scythe, if you haven’t picked one up yet! Equip a 2H scythe with INT and Vit. Third stat can either be socket or Life per Hit. You should have, at least, one Life per Hit in one of your gear. If you’re desperate, you can put in a purple gem. Otherwise, Topaz for +Thorns should be on it.

Life per Hit is great as a temporary stat during the early game. It triggers Grisly Tribute, and is, generally, a welcome defensive boost.

Belt: It’s a massive source of defense. Since the free set doesn’t come with a belt, better invest some time into getting a decent one. INT VIT ARMOR LIFE% is what you want.

Bracer & Necklace: with Physical%These two rolls are extremely important in the bottleneck of this guide – GR20.

Skill%? We don’t really focus on one skill but Death Nova is a good choice.

Rings & Amulet: INT and Sockets are the 2 most important stat for these items. Better look for good accessories so you only need to socket in your legendary gems once you get them.

Body & Legs: Other than INT and VIT, equip ones with Armor and Sockets. This will definitely help you as you climb up the torment level.

Gems: Might as well be aware on what you need:

  • Helm: It’s between Diamond and Amethyst for CDR (offensive) and Life% (defensive).
  • Weapon: Emerald for Crit Damage, or Amethyst if desperate for Life per Hit.
  • Other slots: You SHOULD slot Rubies or Emeralds for +Armor!

Generally speaking – remove bad stats such as:

  • Life Regen – trash tier stat.
  • Reduced Resource Cost – not really relevant.
  • ALLRES – change to Armor, Vit or something else…
  • ASPD – good, but its more of an end-game DPS addition with ‘thresholds’.
  • Excessive CDR – Considered more of a late-game optimization.

For good stats like:

  • INT / VIT – our core stats.
  • Armor – our best defensive stat.
  • Crit related stats – never sad to have these.
  • Life per Hit – great in the early game.
  • Life% – can’t complain with this.
Customize Skill Bindings

If you’re not allowed to put two skills on your bar because they’re from the same category – FEAR NOT! This isn’t a bug or a permanent in-game restriction. You simply have to CHECK ON ELECTIVE MODE, via Esc > Options > Gameplay > Elective Mode!

Binding Force Move to Mouse wheel up & down is a value change that every player should make IMO. It prevents misclicks and skill misfires, and forces you to move to where otherwise an enemy might be.

Seasonal Journey Chapter 2: Getting the 2 piece

This is essentially the same as the leveling build. Good 'ol basic Nova for chumps, Corpse Lance for chunks - Golem to make sure you have it.

Necromancer Fresh 70 No Set Build
Skill & Rune
Bone Spike (Open) Blood Spikes
Death Nova Unstable Compound
Corpse Lance Blood Lance
Blood Rush Molting (Potency)
Devour Satiated (Open)
Command Golem Flesh Golem
Passives
Dark Reaping Stand Alone
Swift Harvesting Overwhelming Essence

A pretty basic build if I've ever made one. Just make sure not to over eagerly Devour Corpse Lance the fatties first.

Chapter 1 & 2 - Do those bounties and kill those bosses. You'd have completed many of these along your way to level 70. The loose ends are chumpy. Get it done quick. Complete these in Hard mode.

Don't forget to bring out a pet! Pets pick up gold for you - so why not!? A lot of people may forget about this from time to time.

Temporary Anti-boss Build
L60+ Anti Boss No Set Build
Skill & Rune
Siphon Blood Power Shift
Skeletal Mage Skeleton Archers
Command Skeletons Dark Mending
Blood Rush Potency
Frailty Scent of Blood
Command Golem (Open) Bone Golem (Open)
Passives
Extended Servitude Overwhelming Essence (remove if below 70)
Grisly Tribute Any

*This build was tested with only rare items.

The most difficult thing about this tier is not knowing what build or skills to use as a Fresh 70 Necro, but thankfully we got some ideas for ya. Getting the free 2 piece is not a challenge.

The most important part about this early chunk is
KEEPING IN MIND THE CONTENTS OF THE "Setting up" TAB ABOVE.
Don't just blindly scrap everything

Seasonal Journey Chapter 3: Getting the 4 piece
S20 Trag’Oul’s Avatar 2-piece Set Build
Skill & Rune
Bone Spike (Open) Blood Spikes
Death Nova Unstable Compound
Corpse Lance Blood Lance
Blood Rush All active
Devour Satiated (Open)
Command Golem Flesh Golem
Passives
Dark Reaping Stand Alone
Swift Harvesting Overwhelming Essence

No change, except that Blood Rush gains the effects of all runes, all the same notes from the previous tabs’ build applies here too.

I know that some entries in Chapter 3 calls for it to be completed in Master, but it doesn’t say you have to complete the bounty in Master, too. Just in case you still haven’t ticked off the bounty cache entries, finish them in Hard mode.

Accomplish the other entries that needs you to interact with the crafter NPCs (Kadala, Jeweler and Kanai).

Now, increase difficulty to Master and let’s wrap up this chapter.

  • Complete a Nephalem Rift
  • Kill Urzael – Act V, Westmarch Heights
  • Kill Skeleton King – Act I, The Royal Crypt

Collect your reward, reroll, equip your new gear and let’s head on over to the next tab!

Seasonal Journey Chapter 4: Getting the 6 piece

I sincerely hope you built up one of the cheese methods mentioned at the beginning. The Torment IV entries are impossible without either method OR a good legendary drop.

S20 Trag’Oul’s Avatar 4-piece Set Build
Skill & Rune
Bone Spike (Open) Blood Spikes
Death Nova Unstable Compound
Corpse Lance Blood Lance
Blood Rush All active
Frailty Harvest Essence
Command Golem Flesh Golem
Passives
Dark Reaping Stand Alone
Swift Harvesting Spreading Malediction

The above build works with cheese method 1 – for thorns cheese build check the next tab.

Basically the same build, but OPTIONALLY swapping out Devour for Frailty, and our “worst” passive for Spreading Malediction. If you’re confident playing without a generator you can put Devour back in.

Trag’Oul’s set bonuses 2 and 4 aren’t that exceptional – especially when we need damage. Somewhere, midway into this chunk, we will transition into a Thorns build.

Finish off these entries before you proceed to the next “clicky” for the GR20 build discussion.

Upgrade a Rare to Legendary w/ Kanai’s Cube: Upgrade 2H Scythe. Consider yourself lucky if you get Reilena’s Shadowhook, but MANY of the 2H Scythes are super useful, simply edit your build to accommodate their power.

Complete a Torment I Rift: Depending on your gear this can be painful, but it shouldn’t be the end of the world. Hopefully, the Scythe you just got helps you along.

Set Difficulty to Torment II: Kill Adria in Act V, Ruins of Corvus

Set Difficulty to Torment IV: Rush over to the bosses! Ignore any enemies on the way!

THESE GUYS ARE SURPRISINGLY TOUGH. TIV bosses are quite chunky for a “raw” build, so this is the best time to experiment with your THORNS BUILD. Check the next tab for the Thorns build. If you got good drops and can manage – great!

  • Kill Butcher – in Act I, Halls of Agony Level 3
  • Kill Odeg the Keywarden – Act I, Fields of Misery
  • Kill Sokahr the Keywarden – Act II, Dahlgur Oasis
  • Kill Xah’Rith the Keywarden – Act III, Stonefort
  • Kill Nekarat the Keywarden – Act IV, Garden of Hope 2nd Tier
  • Keywardens maps have a key icon next to the waypoint. Purple arrows point you to their location after a short while once you’re in their respective map.

One more obstacle before you get the last 2 chunks of your free set. But before you ready yourself for GR20, check first if its unlocked for you. If it’s still grayed out, do a couple of the highest GRs you’re allowed to do until you have access to it.

Necro Fresh 70 Trag'Oul's 4 piece GR 20

Again, if you were unlucky enough not to get a significant, game-breaking legendary (or one of the cheese methods) this is going to be ROUGH. This is the build to cheese via a Thorns setup which I’ve mentioned multiple times leading up to this.

S20 Trag’Oul’s Avatar GR20 4-piece Free Set Build
Skill & Rune
Bone Spike (Open) Blood Spikes
Revive Purgatory
Frailty (Decrepify) Scent of Blood (Opportunist)
Blood Rush All active
Command Skeleton Dark Mending
Command Golem Flesh Golem
Passives
Grisly Tribute Aberrant Animator
Spreading Malediction Extended Servitude

Revert to previous builds if you’re NOT using thorns, or get a good legendary.

FIX PARAGONS: INT  | CDR | Armor% | AD

>>> TRAGOUL 4 GR20 VIDEO HERE <<<

For a “reference”, here were my stats and what I tested with:

  • NO ‘special’ legendaries aside from the 4PC Trag’Oul’s Avatar.
  • NO Pylons taken.
  • NO Legendary Gems.
  • NO Cubed powers used.
  • Remaining Time: anywhere between 1 and 4 minutes
  • Thorns: 40600 (30k is fine I feel, but don’t tempt fate)
  • Toughness: 12m (It was overkill)

Ah, the Thorns build… How does it work? It centers around Aberrant Animator which gives minions a percentage of your Thorns. So the goal is for the enemies to hit your minions (which is great).

Revive will be our spender of choice since it gives us a bunch of possible minions, to tag as many mobs as possible with Thorns.

Lastly, abusing Spreading Malediction with Frailty. The larger the clump you fight, the better it is for you. Don’t be afraid to drag lone yellows to new friends. Frailty is the only reason why I added an essence generator (Bone Spikes).

Try to remove any slow and stun from your followers (or any CC) as you want the enemies to have “easy access” to you and your minions. Your goal is to get hit, man.

The two and four set bonuses of Trag’Oul are pretty irrelevant so you can add two to four more Thorns pieces.

Overall, this should pose no threat if you prepared in advance – which you did, didn’t you?

Fresh 70 Necromancer: 6 piece Free Set Build

Trag’Oul isn’t so hot right now so I recommend getting the speediest setup you can scrap up for now, then transition into a legit speedfarming build.

Season 20 Trag’Oul’s Full Free Set Build
Skill & Rune
Bone Spike (Open) Blood Spikes
Death Nova Blood Nova
Corpse Lance Blood Lance
Blood Rush All active
Devour (Frailty) Satiated (Aura of Frailty)
Command Golem (Open) Flesh Golem (Open)
Passives
Dark Reaping Stand Alone
Life from Death Blood for Blood

This is an “open” build which can use any skill that costs life (which is then modified by our 6 piece bonus). Just so you know, let me list the commonly used life skills here:

Skill Rune Note
Death Nova Blood Nova Recommended
Corpse Lance Blood Lance Godlike anti-elite
Skeletal Mage Life Support Fuels Corpse Lance!
Bone Spear Blood Spear Garbage…

The recommended build above contains the most CORPSE and ESSENCE crutches. The more adept you are at the Necro playstyle (or getting certain drops to alleviate these problems), editing the build to reduce these crutches can yield SIGNIFICANT power spikes.

Reaper’s Wraps – craft this once you get the plan from any Torment Malthael (Act IV). It just helps so much early on! It synergizes extremely well with Blood for Blood.

A quick review before proceeding…

FROM HERE OUR GOAL IS TO GAIN POWER FAST. The next logical steps are Legendary Gems, and being mindful of the Chase Items you need to find.

Keep these important things in mind as you progress!

Non-set pieces: Review

Just to recap the stat priorities per item on your new free set…

GET YOUR ARMOR ROLLS! Preferably on:
Chest, Legs, Boots, Belt, and Shoulders.
If you get it elsewhere for now, that’s fine.

Death Nova% on Boots and Helm. The safe option is to take it on Boots, since losing Helm stats suck. Corpse Lance% shows up in Chest and shoulders, if you’re wondering, but it’s not necessary this early on.

Physical% on Bracer and Amulet: 2 simple rerolls for 30-40% power increase. Damn.

Belt: makes you fatty. INT VIT ARMOR LIFE% is what you want.

Weapons: Rerolling weapons is a guide in and of itself, but this early on, Life per Hit is very, very important.

Sockets on Rings and Amulet: you better have this on your jewelries now, especially since you’re slowly building up your legendary gems pile. Don’t forget INT + CRIT on it, too!.

Gems: In body and leg slots, you want +Armor so go with Rubies or Emerald. Diamond on head for CDR, or Amethyst on head for Life% if you’re sorely lacking defense. This early on, the defensive choices are probably better.

  • Remove useless stats: Reroll off the stats that really don’t do anything significant.
    • life per second
    • resource cost reduction
    • attack speed is only good if you’re familiar with thresholds
    • excessive ALLRES
    • excessive CDR
  • Take good stats:
    • INT/VIT
    • Armor
    • Any Crit stat
    • Life%

Getting the “correct” stats has a much higher impact
vs. getting the “perfect” stats, for now.

Gaining Power!

Now we have to gain as much power, as quickly as possible.

Legendary Gems

This is the easiest way to gain power simply because acquiring them has little to no RNG. Getting 3 of your best gems will increase your power dramatically in a short time span.

Click on the tabs to see Trag’Oul’s “Big 3” gems and “others”.

Fresh 70 Necro Trag'Oul's 6: Big 3 GemsOther gems?

Get these three to L25 ASAP:

Bane of the Powerful is a great gem for the early game. The good thing is, it’s the first legendary gem to drop from GRs. Its power maxes out at 25, and will serve you for a long time yet.

Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard is arguably the most important gem for you this early on. Killing yourself, or going too low is a REAL RISK with Trag’Oul’s. This gem mitigates a bunch of that risk. You can level it up as much as you want (maybe as your second priority gem), and use it for augments later. I, personally, love keeping a high level Gizzard in my stash :)!

Trapped for DPS, Moratorium for DEFENSE.

Moratorium is pretty godlike in the early game. Combined with Gizzard and Trag’Oul’s self-healing, it’s a great source of DEFENSE. It practically caps at L25 so it’s great early on with minimal investment and just chuck it for augments later. For a more future-proof investment, Esoteric Alteration is the late-game defensive gem of choice.

Bane of the Trapped makes a lot of sense since we’re going for Death Nova. Most enemies will be in range for it to trigger from the L25 Trapped effect. Personally, I don’t think you need the extra DPS this early and I would rather invest into a defensive gem.

Any other gems worth it?

Bane of the Stricken is absolutely necessary in the LATE GAME for almost any build.

Esoteric Alteration is the late game defensive gem of choice.

Boon of the Hoarder: A great gem to have for speedfarming.
(See: D3 Speedfarming, Necro Speedfarming General, Necro Best Speedfarm)

Collect those legendary gems mentioned above and level them up to, at least, level 25. This shouldn’t be so hard as you only need GR34 to get one legendary gem to 25!

With 3 of your best gems at L25 – try higher Torment levels. So now the real farming begins… and likely, the defense problems begin, too.

Playing the Build & Adjustments

Now that you have the base “power level” of your 6 set and gems, let’s take a short time to review How to Play the Build. Here’s some basic tips for playing Trag’Oul’s 6.

Also, as you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.

Here we discuss Playstyle Notes and build Build Adjustments.

Playing Trag'Oul's 6 - BasicsOffense & ResourceDefense & HealingSpeed & Mobility

Death Nova Clumps > Corpse Lance Elites > Devour leftover corpses > Proceed

Devouring corpses gives essence, which then drop Health Orbs (Life from Death passive), which trigger your free spell stack (via Blood for Blood passive), supported by Dark Reaping.

Ultimately, the build is very open to adjustment.
You can go “no generator” or generate more corpses for bosses/elites.
There’s a lot you can do.

Command Golem is “optional”, its only purpose is to easily generate corpses for you. Feel free to change it up.

Your 4pc defensive bonus should always be maxed out by your various skills. In a pinch, you can use Blood Rush’s oft forgotten self-heal (by passing thru a guy) to maintain it.

More offense or Essence needed?

Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.

Spreading Malediction is an amazing DPS passive that you should be aware of. It, of course, loses a lot of value if you’re not constantly fighting a clump of guys. Early on is all about farming speed, so this isn’t super useful. However, it’s one of the prime DPS evolutions, so keep it in mind.

Frailty should find its way into the build when tackling harder content, or once your build matures. The suggestion in the build table above is to loosely sub it out for Devour, which is only a rule I follow in tougher GR’s.

Speaking of Essence Generation…

Dark Reaping is great for any type of content you face roll. Free essence and life as you roll through things is good, I hear. This drops off sharply as you challenge extremely chunky enemies or bosses.

Devour-Devouring Aura is a mega tool you should always be aware of. It can COMPLETELY REPLACE YOUR GENERATOR as long as you have a constant stream of BODIES. Of course, the harder the content, the less value this is.

Overwhelming Essence is a great tool to abuse when you have many max essence related tools like Reilena’s Shadowhook.

Aside from the above, most other essence generation alternatives are a bit narrow.

More defense needed?

Defense is primarily thought of as self-healing and damage reduction.

Decrepify is a MASSIVE defensive boost. Enfeeblement is actually a great rune choice, especially for those skittery enemy types. This is likely the go-to defensive evolution for your default built.

Bone Armor, if you can find the space for it. Every rune has a use except for Vengeful Armaments, lol. Thy Flesh Sustained is interesting with Trag’Oul…

Self-healing is an integral part of Trag’Oul’s early game!

The recommended passive combo we’re packing up there takes care of a lot of BS. Dark Reaping + Life from Death + Blood for Blood is a super synergistic kit to keep you going. Draw Life could potentially be abused with Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard, lol.

Necro has a smattering of other Life-Healing skills, but they’re not so notable.

== Pet based healing is powerful, if you can fit Command Skeleton in your build ==

Command Skeletons-Dark Mending: It’s a great choice for a default rune for obvious reasons. Percent based max HP healing is no joke, given the amount of health we burn through. It makes fighting rift guardians much, much safer as you’re given a constant stream of HP.

Grisly Tribute + Life per Hit rolls, is literally passive healing which, while slightly worse than Dark Mending for Trag’Oul, still isn’t so bad.

=== Grisly Tribute and/or Dark Mending solve a lot of the early problems ===

More mobility needed?

Fueled by Death is the best “easy to slot in” mobility change for Necro.

Decrepify-Opportunist is GREAT FOR BOUNTIES, but not much else as I think you lose the bonus when they die. Just curse guys and run!

Any other changes for speed at this point is too greedy, and I can’t recommend it.
(See: D3 Speedfarming, Necro Speedfarming General, Necro Best Speedfarm)

Ultimately, I can only do so much to guide you. More so in the case of Trag’Oul’s, every item drop and content type changes your needs. How well you can get a feel for these evolutions will be integral to your power, and I daresay your growth as a player.

Items to look for

Now that legendary gems are wrapped up (the easy part…), it’s time for the ENDLESS grind for the perfect items!

Reaper’s Wraps – craft this once you get the plan from any Torment Malthael (Act IV). It just helps so much early on! It synergizes extremely well with Blood for Blood.

Other non-RNG crafted gear?

Both of these suggestions require Ring of Royal Grandeur.

Captain Crimson’s set is always great. CDR, Resource Reduction, DMG+ and DEF+ is basically all you need rolled into two items!

Aughild’s set isn’t a slouch either. While I’d rather use the above, Aughild’s uses a bracer slot potentially freeing up your belt (Dayntee’s Binding).

Blood ShardsDeath's BreathClassics

Using Blood Shards:

Belts for Dayntee’s Binding is probably the strongest possible drop for you right now. It’s very flexible and you can choose “more defense” or “more offense” build flexibility by choosing between Decrepify or Frailty.

Oddly, there’s not much else that we “specifically want”.

Shoulders for Corpsewhisper Pauldrons is a pretty solid evolution. You don’t really need it unless you’re going for tougher GR’s, but it’s great to keep in mind.

Bracer for Nemesis helps greatly with farming speed. Also some niche drops here like Strongarm Bracers. Pretty slim pickings after that.

Low-tier fillers

After that, it gets really slim for the body piece fillers.

Helm for Leoric’s Crown and Mask of Scarlet Death.
Chest for Requiem Cereplate and Aquila Cuirass.
Boots for Steuart’s Greaves.

That’s pretty much it for the “25 bucks” tier. Rings are up next: There are many other usable rings. UnityKrysbin’sLornelle’s

Again reminding you of the bounty rings:

Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:

2H Scythes for Reilenna’s Shadowhook is what you want here for good ‘ol passive bonus damage that works with anything. Aside from this we also get Bloodtide Blade which boosts our main skill, Death Nova.

1H Scythe is up next for other bonuses like Trag’Oul’s Corroded Fang and Scythe of the Cycleboth work with “anything”.

Here’s a sample of what you can equip:

Equipped Offhand Kanai’s Cube Value
Shadowhook Bloodtide Great
Shadowhook Cycle Great
Shadowhook Fang Great
Bloodtide Shadowhook Great
Cycle Any Fang OK – preferable 2H mainhand
Cycle Any Shadowhook OK – preferable 2H mainhand
Cycle Any Bloodtide OK – preferable 2H mainhand
Fang Any Cycle OK – preferable 2H mainhand
Fang Any Shadowhook OK – preferable 2H mainhand
Fang Any Bloodtide OK – preferable 2H mainhand

As you can see any setup is OK! The power level of your off-hand Phylactery greatly determines how good the bottom half of the setups are (1h+offhand).

The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.

Ring of Royal Grandeur – You can get this form Act I bounties. Use it to break your set for a temporary filler item!

Convention of Elements – A generic DPS ring that’s amazing paired with other cooldowns. Most builds can get a kick out of this.

Unity – Put it on your undying Follower and yourself for 50% DR. Value.

Accessory Sets: Bastions of Will and Endless Walk will always be a consideration for a grand majority of characters – you’re no exception.

Reaper’s Wraps: this isn’t so bad to have early on since this would greatly help with our Essence regen. You’ll get the recipe from Malthael.

Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac: a must have for those long ass cooldown skills!

Goldwrap + Avarice Band + Boon of the Hoarder: Don’t be sick of me reminding you.
(See: D3 Speedfarming, Necro Speedfarming General, Necro Best Speedfarm)

Bridging to the End-game

Trag’Oul isn’t so hot right now so I recommend getting the speediest setup you can scrap up for now, then transition into a legit speedfarming build.

So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

Trag’Oul’s takes a while to get rolling but it’s not a bad set. You can easily transition to any set you like once you can speedfarm 8/10 and beyond efficiently.

  1. Hey, sorry if the question was already answered, but what do we use the Taeguk for?
In every source I could find online it was said that the the gem doens’t work with blood syphon. Was it reworked?

  2. This was an awesome guide. I started as a beginner completely new to this game and in a month of casual playing I’ve acquired everything in the guide and am now paragon 500. My question is, I’m currently hitting a limit at GR 60 and I’m wondering if I should continue to improve my gem rank/start augmenting/obtain ancients OR if I should start going into other builds. If so, are there any recommendations or guides for hitting GR90 (somewhat comfortably).

  3. Hi, i wanna ask, on the guide it says to get % army fo the dead on shoulders/chests, but its actually impossible to get that affix right now, i double checked with d3planner

  4. Hi, I know the comment thread is pretty old, but I have a quick (and hopefully) easy question.

I’ve used this guide from level 1 to 70 (w/ +60 paragon) and it worked beautifully!, Thanks very much!

Throughout this page (Necromancer fresh level 70 guide), the Land of Dead runes listed actually belong to the Army of the Dead spell. Did I miss something, or is this page referring to an earlier patch?

Thanks again for the awesome guide and I’m loving my 6-piece Rathma set.

  5. What would you recommend for off hand after getting the amulet if the main weapon is 1h Scythe of the Cycle? since there is no bone armor (cold rune).

  6. Thank you for this clear and very well laid out guide. Aside from the LoN/LoD confusion (which a quick google search resolved) I was able to start my journey towards building the masquerade set in a fun and enjoyable way.

  7. HI

i am still farily new – but there doesnt seem to be a legacy of nightmare gem but that is a set right ?
do I get that or do i get the lehacy of dreams gem ?

    • Oh boy… HC is a different animal… I hate that your main enemy is against the server. Basically I would add more defense than I would usually – and add the free death passive.

The main advice? If your free death is down, play safe or GTFO.

IDK, the topic of HC is a complex one…

  8. In the setting up portion you first say allres is useless so get armor but then a few paragraphs down you say the opposite. So which is it?

  9. It took me forever to find you guys have a DFans build for a gearless 70 necro. Please update this page with a secondary gearless guide like you have for the other classes for other people to have an easier time. Otherwise your guides have been pretty great so far, more fun builds than icy-veins.

  10. Thanks for work you do, thanks to your guides my wife and I have noth been able to get our season sets and have ideas on where to go next. Keep up the great work!

  11. Hi
Thanks alot for the starter build, I used 2 guides before this one to get the pieces I needed, got them after a bit of struggle but this helped a great and awesome deal for starting Grifts. And ofc speedfarming, and not to mention the guides for the set dungeons, you guys are truly awesome!!! Thanks a bunch the Grace of Inasrius set was exactly like stated brainless. The demonhunter one was challenging but still got it thanks to the awesome guides and maps with routes provided!!!

  12. Thank you for the guide, it helped me, and not only to follow the prescribed steps, but to start figuring out some bits for myself. I’m a casual player, my non-seasonal paragon is only 123 or so.

    I have two questions.
How high my thorns amount must be for starting out with 4-piece set, striving for 6? I have 12350 now, is that ok to start with and what’s an okay amount to have in the process?

About trag’oul – I got myself a surprisingly nice pieces of free set, I mean, a lot with armor, which is good for trag’oul, one piece has death nova percent… but how should I reroll the secondaries on it? Should I eliminate all the resistances it has? Should I roll for sockets? Thorns? etc.

    Thanks again

    • try upping your thorns (at least while you’re completing the free set) to around 50k minimum. Get them for your secondary stats for now… Sockets for head (to put in yellow gem for more thorns) and weapon for that added armor.

      • I want to tell the story of how it was for me after all. Didn’t want to reroll for Thorns on my trag’oul pieces having a little experience on which stats will I use/need after the season.

After all, starting from TI-II it wasn’t easy in terms of dmg. I haven’t got a lot of great legendaries to cube/use on char and materials to upgrade rares (and I have an issues with disconnects, so that is really not helping to do challenges). No Reilena’s, no Bloodtide, no Trag’oul’s fang – I had no dmg. I ended up not using much Thorns and not adjusting my build for them, but I had Heart of Iron which raised its number to ~21k I think, which is near to the number you have in the guide, and I couldn’t see how raising it can improve my speed with Golem I used for corpses tanking the mobs a lot. After all, relaying on thorns dmg takes more time (for mobs to hit you) I think, and time is luxury in GR.

I had a lot of armor and previously cubed Aquila cuirass and Lornelle’s sunstone, which gave me the ability to survive anything pretty easy – as you’ve said in your guide, it was really a defense overkill. But I had no dmg = no speed for pushing GRs. Of course, there’s Spreading malediction + frailty, but it wasn’t enough and it’s useless against standalone bosses like rift guardians, which can just ruin GR run in the end because of the time you’ll need to wipe RG in the end. And I had to come up with something else.

So when I found Thunderfury, it was at least something – I cubed it immediately which helped me with packs and speed. I had Lost Time in off-hand, and Devil’s tongue (leg wit no special effect on it but good stats), on which I rerolled AD% to socket and inserted highest emerald which gave me an additional 90-100k dmg which was a real save there.
And after that I found Oculus ring – chance to create an area of power on monster kill which raises dmg by 73% while standing in it. I already had better jewelry, but thankfully I figured out that it works on follower too, so I gave it to Kormack. It was a final stroke to my improvised build 🙂 Imagine what was like playing it 🙂 I doubt that all that jumping would go well without blood rush.

So thank you again, your guide inspired me to go for it and search for resolving seasonal goals with what I had in hands, almost literally 🙂 Got my 6 piece, wings and frame.

  13. Maybe a stupid question. But how would you recommend to geht rid of the corpses? In the full set build there is no corpse consuming skill.

  14. TeamBRG, TeamBRG… jus’ wanna shout out for an excellent guide.

I jumped into the season waaaaay late and Rhykker pointed me towards your build guides. I used it along wit a couple others for reference, but once I hit 70 & started amassin’ the starter set, I found your guide the best of the bunch. And while I had crafted Reapers & cubed the RoRG I got, it was the closin’ remarks of the “Necro Fresh 70 Rathma 4 piece GR 20” section that spurred me on to some of the most fun I’ve had in DIII. Period. As Craig once posited, “…but peer pressure is a MF’er.”

So, some 8 gameplay hours after dingin’ 70, seven (7) GRifts, countless deaths and a whole lotta learnin’ ’bout DIII & the class lata, my Necro has claimed the 6-pc Rathma’s.

And how was the diligence to finish it “raw” rewarded? A legendary version of the chest dropped on the killin’ blow AND I got regular versions of the iconic Jesseth set along the way.

Thanks for the guide… thanks for the motivation… but most of all thanks for the great fun I’m havin’ in DIII as a result.

    • Wow, thanks for the very kind words MrXzavy! Helpin’ people out is our goal, after all!

On a side note “completing it raw” has been a point of pride for me and princess. It has been done for every class, and ever set, even when the community at large said it was impossible. Peer pressure is a MF’er indeed!
