Fresh 70 Barbarian: Getting the Free Set!

Click below to reveal the instructions you need for each step:

IMPORTANT: Setting up!

Fresh 70 Barbarian Items needed (yellows are ok).

Getting decent item is a mustSTR+VIT on everything is a good place to start.  Sockets in chest, pants and everything that can get one are recommended!

2H Mighty Weapon: I recommend mighty weapons since you can roll Life per Fury Spent on them. Having STR and VIT is great too.

Mighty Belt: STR LPFS VIT ALLRES is what you’re aiming for.

Life per Fury Spent is SUPER GOOD right now (and pretty much anytime) and MIGHTY WEAPONS AND MIGHTY BELTS are where you can find it!

Physical% on bracer would really be good, and on amulet, too.

Sockets on Rings & Amulet: Seriously, try to find/fix this up as soon as possible. You’re gonna need ’em when legendary gems come along. Socket STR Crit is the perfect trifecta on Barb’s accessories!

Body + Legs: You get these pieces last. Don’t worry if you have “pretty bad” ones, since you’ll progress really fast. But just in case yo’re wondering, STR VIT is ok. Wouldn’t hurt if you get sockets on them, too, for those shiny Rubies.

You shouldn’t have too much of a problem racing past the journey with Wastes…

Customize Skill Bindings

If you’re not allowed to put two skills on your bar because they’re from the same category – FEAR NOT! This isn’t a bug or a permanent in-game restriction. You simply have to CHECK ON ELECTIVE MODE, via Esc > Options > Gameplay > Elective Mode!

Binding Force Move to Mousewheel up & down is a value change that every player should make IMO. It prevents misclicks and skill misfires, and forces you to move to where otherwise an enemy might be.

Seasonal Journey Chapter 2: Getting the 2 piece

Ah… good ‘ol Rend WW Frenzy. This “catch all” Barb build will suit your needs and more. It’s pretty much a speedfarming build! I put a lot of brainless self-healing in the build, but feel free to adjust it to your liking.

Barbarian Fresh 70 No Set Build
Skill Rune
Rend Bloodbath
Whirlwind Wind Shear
Frenzy Sidearm
Battle Rage Ferocity
War Cry Invigorate
Furious Charge Merciless Assault
Rampage Weapons Master
Unforgiving Inspiring Presence

If you haven’t played this build, abuse Furious Charge-Merciless Assault. Rend and Whirlwind easy trash packs, while Frenzy+Rend melts elites. I also put Frenzy to prevent the “Fury-less dead zone”.

Chapters 1 & 2 – entries here are a “Whirlwind”. You should be able to complete these in no time. What I do is do a bounty when I’m 60+ so I can kill all the required boss kills in one go. If you have a bounty in Ruins of Sescheron, head on over to the next floor (Elder Sanctum) to unlock the Kanai’s Cube, too. Now that’s value!

Stick to Hard Difficulty – you don’t have to be a martyr and waste time completing the season journey in higher difficulties. Just increase the difficulty when needed. Stick to the minimum.

The most important part at this stage is keeping an eye out for those usable rare items we’ve discussed in the “Setting up” TAB ABOVE. Don’t blindly scrap everything you loot.

Seasonal Journey Chapter 3: Getting the 4 piece
Wrath of the Wastes 2 piece Set Build
Skill Rune
Rend Bloodlust
Whirlwind Wind Shear
Frenzy Sidearm
Battle Rage Ferocity
War Cry Invigorate
Threatening Shout Falter / Intimidate
Rampage Weapons Master
Unforgiving Inspiring Presence

(No change, but there’s a lot of flex slots…)

Wrath 2pc is pretty godlike. The only downside is “waiting for loot”, haha. From here on, you *CAN* get greedy with mobility options in your build (SprintPound of Flesh). This is a legit UPGRADE to our Fresh 70 Barb build.

There are a couple of entries that needs to be completed on Master difficulty, however, the rest can be done in Hard mode just to make things easier.

Beat the following on Master difficulty:

  • Skeleton King (Act I, The Royal Crypts)
  • Ghom (Act III, The Keep Depths Level 3)
  • Beat a Nephalem RiftWrath 2 is no joke, just steamroll past this. Again, Frenzy augments your damage vs. Elites quite a bit, as whites die to Rend EASILY.

Complete the other needed entries and let’s go get the last pieces of our free set.

Seasonal Journey Chapter 4: Getting the 6 piece
Wrath of the Wastes 4 piece Set Build
Skill Rune
Rend Bloodbath
Whirlwind Wind Shear
(Open) Sprint Marathon
Battle Rage Ferocity
War Cry Invigorate
Threatening Shout Falter / Intimidate
Rampage Weapons Master
Unforgiving Inspiring Presence

(OPEN: Can be anything that doesn’t interrupt WW much… Sprint purely for speed)

Wrath 4pc is OBSCENELY powerful and there is NO EXCUSE to struggle at any point. We change the build a bit to facilitate LONGER WHIRLWINDING, which triggers the “Rend triple damage” clause given by the 4pc Wastes. Time spent not WW‘ing is damage lost.

Beating GR20 is the main event here, but luckily, we have some other things to do before that!

Upgrade a Rare to Legendary w/ Kanai’s Cube: I’ll go out on a limb and suggest 2H Mace for The Furnace. Wastes doesn’t really need many weapons…

Complete a Torment I Rift: You can do far more than a TI rift, just so you know, but you don’t really need to. Use this rift as a “test” to see how high you can go. TIII+ is even possible.

Set Difficulty to Torment II: Kill Urzael in Act V, Westmarch Heights

Set Difficulty to Torment IV: Race towards the bosses! You don’t have to kill the enemies along the way.

  • Kill Rakanoth – Act IV, Gardens of Hope 1st Tier
  • Kill Odeg the Keywarden – Act I, Fields of Misery
  • Kill Sokahr the Keywarden – Act II, Dahlgur Oasis
  • Kill Xah’Rith the Keywarden – Act III, Stonefort
  • Kill Nekarat the Keywarden – Act IV, Garden of Hope 2nd Tier
  • Keywardens maps have a key icon next to the waypoint. Purple arrows point you to their location after a short while once you’re in their respective map.

Are you ready for GR20 nephalem? Check the obelisk once you’ve completed the other requirements and see the highest GR you can do. If you aren’t quite at 20, do a higher difficulty neph, or 1 or 2 GR’s to reach 20. Up to you.

Check the next clicky for obliterating GR20 using the 4 piece Wrath of the Wastes set.

YOU CANNOT FAIL THIS. I completed **GR25** with 8 minutes remaining, Using yellows that I didn’t really fix up – there is practically no risk for failure.

Don’t get too cocky though! Death is still a possibility. So yet again, I stacked defensives for this build in order to facilitate even the worst RNG. Easy Fury and life gain = sure win.

  • You only need 3 things for this to work out:
    • a 2H Mighty Weapon
    • At the very least have STR and/or VIT in  most of your gear.
    • Life per Fury spent somewhere in there.

I will not insult you and put my “sample stats”. You have to try very hard to fail this.

With 4 piece Wastes and “good yellows”, I’m damn sure I can clear up to 40.
If you somehow magically fail this – I have some bad news for you.

Options & Notes:
You NEED TO USE MIGHTY WEAPONS to trigger Weapons Master!

Torment VI+: Is your new MINIMUM farming level (try higher). Survival will probably be your first roadblock as Wastes, since your damage is pretty high at this stage of the game.

A quick review before proceeding…

As we progress, we move AWAY from Rend, and focus on WHIRLWIND!

We’re going to need all the power we can get! Here are some of the things you need to look out for (gears and stats) and the legendary gems to help us maximize the Wastes set.

Keep these important things in mind as you progress!

Non-set pieces: Review

SOCKETS on your accessories (Rings, Amulet), you should have had them 5 minutes ago, son!!! We’re gonna be getting our legendary gems ASAP next!

Physical%, which is a lot easier to get on Bracers (and, hopefully, on Amulet) should be in your gear as you move forward. Phys is the end-game element, but some people also use Wind Shear (Lightning%), which I recommend in the very early game.

Whirlwind% appears on Boot and Helm, but most of the time you want it only on boots. YOU DO NOT NEED REND% ANYMORE. Rending simply serves to trigger the damage reduction.

Life per Fury Spent appears on MIGHTY BELTS and MIGHTY WEAPONS. Much more notable on Belts, since you don’t sacrifice much to obtain such an amazing recovery stat. LpFS on weapons is usually not taken, since the sacrifice to damage is a little steep – however THIS EARLY ON, it’s not bad.

Remove useless stats: Reroll off the stats that really don’t do anything significant.

  • life per second
  • armor
  • reduce resource cost

Getting the “correct” stats is more important that you think.

Please use a Mighty Weapon

Why Mighty Weapons? Because of WEAPONS MASTER, we gain 2 Fury on hit. This allows us to keep Whirlwinding! Wastes 4: we MUST WW to gain the triple Rend damage buff.

Gaining Power!

Now we have to gain as much power, as quickly as possible.

Legendary Gems

This is the easiest way to gain power simply because acquiring them has little to no RNG. Getting 3 of your best gems will increase your power dramatically in a short time span.

Click on the tabs to see Wrath of the Wastes “Big 3” gems, and “others”.

Wastes 6 Fresh 70: Big 3 GemsTab title

Taeguk: Very few builds can utilize Taeguk, defense and offense rolled into one gem! Taeguk is disgustingly strong when it’s viable – and no other does it like Wastes. This is your best gem by far and should be your highest level one.

Bane of the Powerful: You don’t have to invest much in this gem, as it doesn’t scale in power. Leaving it at 25 is fine while you focus on other gems. Great anti-elite tool.

Gogok of Swiftness: I’m not kidding. I’m not even kidding, man. This gem obliterates Pain Enhancer in the early game. You can even clear up to GR90+ with Gogok of Swiftness… it also gives us the all powerful CDR and dodge stats. Once you’re done with it – use it for augments!

(Pain Enhancer? Why no PEI feel PE is bad early on. And even then, you only need a L25 PE. It’s up to you if you want to use PE this early on, but I do not recommend it. IT IS GREAT LATER ON, but not now).

Any other gems worth it?

Bane of the the Trapped beats Bane of the Powerful later on. While Powerful is great in terms of bang for buck, it shouldn’t really be part of your endgame build.

Bane of the Stricken is mandatory for higher difficulty GR’s. Wastes is laughably bad at killing elites and Rift Guardians. This gem is equal to if not a little more important than Taeguk in the LATE GAME.

Esoteric Alteration is your go-to endgame defensive gem if ever you need one. Wastes 6 is capable of reaching astronomic toughness though so I don’t know if you’ll need this.

Boon of the Hoarder: You need this for speedfarming. And if there’s one thing Wrath of the Wastes is good at… thank god it’s our free set!

(See: Speedfarming GeneralBarbarian SpeedfarmingBarb Fastest Speedfarming)

Just get them asap while slowly climbing the GR levels. Neph. GR. Repeat. Until you have the BIG 3 GEMS.  Don’t overdo the level, just go for efficient farming and cheap empowering. GR 34 is enough to 25 a gem.

With 3 of your best gems at L25 – try much higher Torment levels. So now the real farming begins… and likely the defense problems begin, too.

Playing the Build & Adjustments

Now that we have our free 6 piece Wrath of the Wastes set and legendary gems, here are some tips and notes on How to Play the Build.

Also, as you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.

Here we discuss Playstyle Notes and build Build Adjustments.

Playing Wrath of the Wastes 6 - BasicsOffense & ResourceDefense & HealingSpeed & Mobility

“We must go faster”.

Wastes is blazingly fast and powerful in the stage of the game. No other Barb build comes close to its ease of use and brainlessness to just simply faceroll anything of this difficulty tier.

Don’t drop Taeguk stacks!

Whirwind within elites and bosses” FAT enemy types with large hit boxes can get hit with many cyclones so SPIN WITHIN THEM.

There is no nuance to the early play of Wastes 6… It’s basic, it’s powerful… I can’t say much else but try not to fall asleep, keep your buffs up and SPIN2WIN.

More offense or Fury needed?

Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.

This build is pretty much fully stacked in “practical sources of offense”.

Rampage which is recommended already, is the best overall offensive passive. Brawler and Berserker Rage are notably poorer as they might not always be on.

Wrath of the Berserker-Insanity is a godlike DPS cooldown – it’s a little impractical for now but I would like to raise awareness about it. With enough CDR, the Passive Boon of Bul-Kathos and Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, this can have 100% uptime, which is obviously VERY POWERFUL.

Battle RageInto the Fray or Bloodshed runes are great offensive evolution. I recommend Ferocity since most guys just explode right now.

The Ruthless passive, which I recommend in the build, is great. Don’t be fooled. This has “100% uptime”, as each enemy you’ve benefited from will pass thru the Ruthless phase!

Moar FURY: Resource Generation?

Weapons Master and the Wind Shear rune are the ultra heavy lifters here. They are recommended in the base build for many reasons. Only remove these if you know EXACTLY what you’re doing.

Unforgiving and Animosity are suggested purely to increase the “LOL AFK” aspect of the build. While these suck in the late game, they’re great now while you don’t have the weapon set.

Aside from these there’s not much else you really want for Fury gains.

More defense needed?

Defense is primarily thought of as self-healing and damage reduction.

Life per Fury Spent is a DISGUSTING form of self healing that you should ABUSE. Wastes generates and spends fury like anything. And in turn, heals you like anything.

Ignore Pain is the ultimate defensive cooldown you can slot in that “open” skill. Once you have Pride of Cassius and some CDR, this can have 100% uptime!

Relentless is the highest scaling defense passive available to us. This passive does a lot or work, man! It’s almost impossible to “die slowly” with this passive!!

Threatening Shout-Falter is a great anti-elite damage reduction tool for the midgame.

Superstition is special. It was an old-school way to generate fury amidst elite affixes we could out-heal. Sounds risky, doesn’t it? It’s actually not too bad. It serves as both defense and resource gain so it’s worth mentioning.

Nerves of Steel helps with one the few weaknesses of the build – getting killed in one hit. You can also use Tough as Nails – it’s crappy younger brother for the early game.

Pound of Flesh is notable in the sense that it gives you decent regen, but has a mega movespeed bonus, so it covers 2 bases. But, I guess I wouldn’t take it for defensive reasons – more for the movespeed…

More mobility needed?

Battle Rage-Ferocity (already recommended) is the best base rune for Battle Rage given the goals of Wastes. I would only consider changing this rune out in the toughest of GR’s.

Pound of Flesh does work. Mobility and healing, great for speeds. It adds a layer of regen that’s strong enough to make farming higher difficulties “brainless”.

Sprint is a simple but effective movement tool. It does fall into the “Greedy” category but if you’re going to sacrifice a skill for something, I might as well tell you which one to look for. It’s the default recommendation for the open skill.

Wastes is fast, people! There are so many ways to improve speed but that’s best discussed in a context of actual speed farming.

(See: Speedfarming General, Barbarian Speedfarming, Best Barbarian Speedfarming)

Items to look for

Not that legendary gems are wrapped up (the easy part…), it’s time for the ENDLESS grind for the perfect items! Sadly wastes benefits from 2 very specific rings, which aren’t easy to get with either shards or deaths breaths namely:

Skull Grasp & Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac

Reaper’s Wraps? IMO I never felt like I needed it. Keep it in mind.

Blood ShardsDeath's BreathClassics
Using Blood Shards:

Belts are up first. Pride of Cassius is the GODLIKE find here to increase our defenses. And another gem here is Chilanik’s Chain! MORE SPEED! Also, there are a TON of great fillers like Goldwrap, String of Ears, and Witching Hours.

Shoulders for Mantle of Channeling is VAVAVAVALUE. +DMG and +DEF while Whirlwinding is godlike. Sadly, the other shoulders are trash.

Bracers – hoping for Nemesis Bracer is great for speedfarming, and that’s what Wastes does best. Other bracers are sadly quite bad and are pretty damn niche (APD, Strongarm).

Hexing Pants of Mr. Yan from Legs is a great early game filler!

Ring: Skull Grasp & Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac are the GODLY PAIR for Wastes. These two rings will increase your power level by a tremendous amount all on their own. Convention of Elements also says hi.

Again reminding you of the bounty rings:

Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:

Upgrading 1H-Mighty Weapon the Bul-kathos’ Oath Set (Solemn VowWarrior Blood) is “THE” weapon set. Even if you have to wait for both of them, the gains you get from owning the pair far outweighs ANY OTHER SINGLE WEAPON. Race towards this.

2H Mace: The Furnace – one of those good ‘ol Barb staples. It stays in the cube for Wastes 6.

There’s almost nothing else you’d want with Wastes!

The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.

Ring of Royal Grandeur – form Act I bounties. Use it to break your set for a temporary filler item!

Convention of Elements – Maximize this power by familiarizing yourself with its elemental cycle.

Unity – Put it on your undying Follower and yourself for 50% DR. Value.

Accessory Sets: Bastions of Will and Endless Walk will always be a consideration for a grand majority of characters – you’re no exception.

Reaper’s Wraps: Not relevant for this build, but a classic nonetheless.

Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac: for the huge CDR. WW will trigger this a lot!

Goldwrap + Avarice Band + Boon of the Hoarder: Don’t be sick of me reminding you.

Bridging to the End-game

So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

  1. I found a different 4-piece skill setup, personal preference of course:
LMB – Cleave – Reaping Swing
RMB – Whirlwind – Wind Shear
    A – Furious Charge – Stamina
    S – Rend – Bloodbath
    D – Battle Rage – Ferocity
    F – War Cry – Invigorate
    P1 – Weapons Master
    P2 – Unforgiving
    P3 – Inspiring Presence
    P4 – Rampage

  2. the season 13 barbarian build is overpowered.I suggest pairing MOTE with a good rolled Fury of the Vanquished Peak + seismic slam % on items you can get it.Fun times and makes Seismic slam fun to play with plus all the earthquakes.
