S17 Season of Nightmares and YOU

This season, all characters have, passively, the effects of the Legacy of Nightmares set, which increases your power and defense for each ancient item you have equipped AS LONG AS NO OTHER SET BONUS IS ACTIVE.

While this has many applications for later on, this does not affect your leveling and early game very much at all, so I will not really discuss it in this page.

My only advice is to wear any and all ancients you can while you have no set bonus. Or you can even sacrifice the 2/4 set bonuses of weaker sets if you have 1/2 ancient items – if only to speed up the seasonal journey a bit.

IMPORTANT: Setting up!

Getting decent items are imperativeSockets in chest and pants are a must! Also, STR+VIT on everything is a good place to start.

2H Mighty Weapon: These can roll with a stat “Life per Fury Spent”. Self-healing is a massive problem for us in this early phase – getting either “LpFS or Life per Hit on here would be great.

Mighty Belt: Life on Fury Spent appears on Mighty Belts, too, and this is the only slot wherein you will want it 100% of the time. STR LPFS VIT RES is what you’re aiming for.

— Get ALL RESIST over Armor! —

Barbs are Strength characters, they gain Armor for every point of Strength gained – meaning we gain tons of it for free (plus base Armor values from gear), extra Armor rolls are a waste. Avoid this by instead rolling ALL RESISTS in most body pieces.

Bracer & Necklace: rolls with Fire% which is the main source of our damage later on. Try to get it in, at least, one of these but bracers are an EASY SOURCE for it.

Body + Legs: Yes, we will get free ones, but GR20 ain’t easy for this set. Try to get a decent pair. STR VIT RES SOCKETS is what you want here.

Earthquake% roll on Shoulder and Chest, in case you wanna know.

Sockets on Rings & Amulet: Seriously, try to find/fix this up as soon as possible. You’re gonna need ’em when legendary gems come along.

Gems: Diamonds are way too important early on. Toughness becomes a roadblock a lot earlier than damage will be. Use Rubies if you want more damage.

Reminder to bring out Templar , and your pet to pick up those gold coins.

Reroll off useless stats:

  • Armor – gives diminished returns, as we gain so much of it.
  • Reduced resource cost – a crutch stat, resource is rarely a true roadblock.
  • Life Regen – GARBAGE.
  • Excessive CDR – CDR varies from build to build – but don’t sacrifice core stats for it.

Reroll into good stats:

  • STR /VIT – your core stats
  • ALLRES > Life% – your best defensive stats
  • Crit related stats – your best offensive stats

Season Journey Chapter 2: Getting the 2 piece set

Ah… good ‘ol Rend WW Frenzy. This “catch all” Barb build will suit your needs and more. It’s pretty much a speedfarming build! I put a lot of brainless self-healing in the build, but feel free to adjust it to your liking.

If you haven’t played this build, abuse Furious Charge-Merciless Assault. Rend and Whirlwind easy trash packs, while Frenzy+Rend melts elites. The entire build is designed to be a “speedy” one to zip past the early journey entries. Adjust if needed.

Hard Mode on for Chapters 1 & 2. Rend through all the entries on Hard. Just up the difficulty to complete one neph on Expert.

Haha, had lots of fun with this one. Abuses the bejeesus out of Might 2pc, but requires a very active playstyle and favoring building clumps of enemies. Practice for the future! Unforgiving helps out vs bosses (can switch to Ruthless on neph)

Difficulty: Although there are entries here that need to be finished on Master, you can still complete the bounty cache, if you haven’t already, on Hard.

Beat these on Master:

  • Nephalem Rift – if you can’t complete this, add defenses to your build
  • Urzael – Act V, Westmarch Heights
  • Queen Araneae – Act I, Caverns of Araneae

Season Journey Chapter 4: Getting the 6 piece set
Basic 4pcTemporary Anti-Boss Build

Before you enter the GR20 arena, try completing first the other entries in this chapter. This will not only help you get used to the build playstyle but it can also mean better gear loot.

Upgrade a Rare to Legendary w/ Kanai’s Cube: Is there even a question? 2H Mighty Weapons will yield “Something good”, hopefully. Two very notable ones are Blade of the Tribes and Fury of the Vanished Peak. Both are godly.

Complete a Torment I Rift: This will be the minimum level you should be farming at. Increase if you can easily obliterate a rift.

Set Difficulty Torment II – Kill Zoltun KulleAct II, Archives of Zoltun Kulle

Set Difficulty Torment IVFor the boss and elite kills just RACE TO THEM! Do not bother with trash! Torment IV might force you to use the anti-boss build above.

  • Kill Siegebreaker Assault BeastAct III, Rakkis Crossing
  • Kill Odeg – Keywarden in ACT I, Fields of Misery.
  • Kill Sokahr – Keywarden in ACT II, Dahlgur Oasis.
  • Kill Xah’Rith – Keywarden in ACT III, Stonefort.
  • Kill Nekarat – Keywarden in ACT IV, Gardens of Hope 2nd Tier.
  • Keywardens maps have a key icon next to the waypoint. Purple arrows point you to their location after a short while once you’re in their respective map.

Almost there! You only need to compete GR20! But before that, make sure that it’s unlocked for you. If not, just do a couple of the highest GR you’re allowed to do! Check out the next clicky for anything GR20 related stuff.

Barbarian GR 20: 4pc Might of the Earth

This isn’t “EASY” but far from impossible. One piece of advice? PRACTICE THE BUILD ON A TORMENT III NEPH.

If you don’t feel confident, just do 3 low level GR’s, get 3 L.Gems and use ’em.
This can get really rough if your gear sucks. It’s an IMPRACTICAL BUILD surely.

Lots of room to customize. I beat it with some pretty wild builds as well, but this should be the “balanced” version – I can’t calculate where the weak spot of your build is! Consider adding Battle Rage if you’re lacking DPS, you can even replace WW.

FIX PARAGONS: Str | CDR | All Res | LpH

Remember the setup tab above? Those “good yellows” will go a long way here. Seriously! For “reference”, here were my stats and what I tested with:

  • Offense (sheet): 220K
  • Toughness (sheet): 4M
  • Recovery (sheet): 150K
  • NO ‘special’ legendaries aside from the Might of the Earth 4-pc Free Set.
  • NO Pylons taken.
  • NO Legendary Gems.
  • NO Cubed powers used.
  • Remaining Time:2:30 minutes~

High value gear rerolls: That Fire% on bracer or amulet will help. If you can reroll the shoulder (or a yellow chest) you got for Earthquake%, solid! Those alone will carry you.

Create large groups WHILE finding elites!
Only turn back to kill whites when they pile up a bit.

AVALANCHE-TECTONIC RIFT is what will give you the edge you need. Don’t hold on to the 3rd charge, feel free to use it on trash. Space them out to help you gain Fury via Earthen Might. It will allow you to keep the “rhythm” up, especially against elites.

NO DOWNTIME PLAYSTYLE: Build and spend fury like a madman to keep Leap up. DO NOT HOLD ON TO LEAP, USE IT FOR MOVEMENT! Whirlwind instead of walking to spend Fury and speed up Leap CD!  It’s 100% about Leap, USE IT AS IT GETS UP, ALWAYS. But never ever overflow on Fury!

Self-healing is a must. While Life per Fury Spent and Life per Hit will really help you here, Good ‘ol War Cry – Invigorate and Relentless (with an option of Inspiring Presence) will cover your butt here. Since I didn’t take pylons and cleared – feel free to be extra safe.

I cleared with 4 different sets of yellow of varying quality. I’ll tell ya, a few rolls and fixing your gear up will go a damn long way. This is too close to call and a more inexperienced player has a high risk to just outright fail. Luckily, you’ve been reading this!

Again, I had nothing. I took no PYLONS. ZERO PARAGONS. Since I did it RAW – these will serve as a great estimation. Good luck!

Don’t let pride get in the way of progress. If you’re getting roughed up in there try to do 3 low level GR’s for some good gems first. But to serve as a little inspiration for you.

Will you really allow GR20 to beat you? Heh.

I realize this is a weird looking build, but it centers around spending Fury as fast as you can (with the appropriate skills), to reset cooldown on Leap.

FROM HERE OUR GOAL IS TO GAIN POWER FAST. The next logical steps are Legendary Gems, and being mindful of the good items you need to find.

Reapers Wraps is a pretty OK filler for now. While might of the earth is one of those builds that resource isn’t that big of a problem, it’s never bad to have.

A quick review before proceeding…

As you’re proceeding with the next steps, keep these important things in mind!

Gear Review & Fixing up

Earthquake% appears on chest and shoulder. There’s no excuse not to have these on your free pieces, no matter how badly they rolled.

Fire% on Bracer / Amulet: another 2 rerolls for 30-40% power spike. Value.

Belt, Weapon with life per fury spent, as oft mentioned. While you may or may not have the luxury to roll it on your weapon, it MUST BE ON THE BELT!

Weapons: Rerolling weapons is a guide in and of itself, but this early on, Life per Hit or Life per Fury spent will cover up where your build severely lacks right now – self-healing.

Sockets on rings & Amulet: Find/make them soon, since legendary gems are our next objective! Bonus if you can get STR+Crit related stats!

Don’t neglect gems! 5 good Diamonds can really help out. ALLRES is huge for your defensive stack, and you’re gonna need every bit of it as you rise!

Remove useless stats: Reroll off the stats that really don’t do anything significant.

  • life per second: completely useless.
  • armor: We have too much of it, and too little allres.
  • resource cost reduction: Almost always just a crutch.
  • attack speed: useless for most builds, and especially useless for this one!

And get good stats: like STR/VIT, ALLRES, and CRIT stats.

Getting the “correct” stats has a much higher impact vs.
getting the “perfect” stats, for now.

Gaining Power!

Now we have to gain as much power, as quickly as possible.

Legendary Gems

This is the easiest way to gain power simply because acquiring them has little to no RNG. Getting 3 of your best gems will increase your power dramatically in a short timespan.

Get these three to L25 ASAP:

Bane of the Powerful is a great gem to 25 asap. Helps out against elites and is effective even if left at 25 for a while! This going first is a no-brainer.

Moratorium: Yep, good ‘ol forgotten Moratorium. 25 points in this guy is like a mini Unity and is ABSOLUTE VALUE for the early game. You can always use the gem for augments later on! If you really don’t want to invest into a temporary defensive gem, skip this for Bane of the Trapped. Alternatively, you can just invest straight into a permanent defensive gem such as Esoteric Alteration.

Bane of the Trapped is a basic DPS gem. While we have many stuns and slows to help us trigger this, the L25 bonus is more than enough.

Any other gems worth it?

Bane of the Stricken is absolutely necessary in the late game.

Esoteric Alteration is the late game defensive gem of choice.

Boon of the Hoarder: You need this for speedfarming – get it up to 50 ASAP!

I have to repeat myself – trust me on the PE and WoL!

Try to get the Top 3 gems to level 25 as soon as possible. Just do some efficient point farming. GR34 is enough to level a gem to 25!

Once they’re at the appropriate level, get your Barb to higher torments! Higher torment farming means better loot for Barbie!

Playing the Build & Adjustments

Now that you have the base “power level” of your 6 set and gems, let’s take a short time to review How to Play the Build. Here’s some basic tips for playing Might of the Earth to help you as you progress into higher difficulties. It’s by no means comprehensive, but helpful.

Also, as you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.

Playing ME 6 - BasicsOffense & ResourceDefense & HealingSpeed & Mobility

If you’ve been on this guide the whole time, then you’ve heard some of this already! Forgive me if I repeat it for newcomers!

Build, spend and manage fury for one purpose: More LEAPS.

Leap is the absolute core of your build. It gives you Armor, it triggers Earthquakes, it helps with mobility. USE IT ON COOLDOWN – even if just for movement! Using up Fury reduces cooldown on Leap – which means a lot for us…

Anger management: don’t overflow! Remember that triggering Quakes, Leaps and other things give you a ton of Fury via Earthen Might. DO NOT GO OVER. Sure, you can go a little bit over but don’t just blindly generate 300 fury without spending. This is why we have Ancient Spear – Boulder Toss, to quickly dump fury. Seismic Slam, too.

Boulder Toss – don’t always wait till max: While the obvious choice would be to “wait to fill to max” before we let it go, this isn’t always correct. Let’s say your Leap is 1 second from being on cooldown, a Boulder Toss would be a complete waste! What to do in this case?

Seismic Slam > Leap > Boulder Toss > Leap
(not wasting the large CDR by just blindly using Boulder Toss before the first leap)

It’s an active playstyle and you’ll be rewarded for building and spending fury, constantly trying to engage larger groups. If there’s one thing Might of the Earth sucks at, it’s killing loosely stacked stragglers – drag ’em over to the next pile or LEAVE ‘EM!

More offense or Fury needed?

Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.

Resource Gain with Might of the Earth is solely carried by the Earthen Might passive. You do not need any more help in this regard (even Leap is a generator). In fact you need ways to DUMP resource asap!

==== We’re “practically” capped off damage! ===

Damage isn’t easy to come by. Battle Rage-Bloodshed is the most recent unique addition and it works well for us. Threatening Shout-Falter is an option. Hard to fit more skills in since we have to use so many to “on” our build.

Passives: Rampage > Ruthless Brawler are the best passives we can get for offense. We already use two of them! Berserker Rage isn’t great for us.

That leaves it to only Threatening-Falter and Brawler… slim choices, but they’re there…

More defense needed?

Defense is primarily thought of as self-healing and damage reduction.

While I can’t speak for the highest reaches of GR, self-healing is important NOW.

The best early game mix is LpH on weapon, LpFs on belt. It’s a great mix that you can’t really go wrong with. While rerolling weapons is a sensitive topic, I can say for absolute certainty that your belt should have Life per Fury Spent. If you’re supremely desperate, Bloodthirst passive gives you a decent amount of Life per Fury Spent.

Relentless is the best defensive passive you have. It should go in and out of your build depending on your needs. It helps you heal up as well!

Nerves of Steel ain’t bad for higher GR’s – Don’t knock free deaths, man. Superstition is generally a poor choice. That’s about it for viable defensives…

War Cry – Veteran’s Warning should be the late game rune of choice, as Invigorate will drop off fast as you go higher up. A lot of people dislike the “artificial toughness” brought by dodge, if that’s the case for you, Impunity is the next best thing.

Threatening Shout does work, too. The base skill does give 20% enemy attack reduction, which is amazing. As long as the rune isn’t Falter, any other rune keeps the base effect.

More mobility needed?

Reducing Leap’s cooldown is a great addition to mobility for the set. We can take some questionable skills and passives since the early game build is really loose.

Battle Rage-Ferocity is 15% movespeed forever at “no” cost. By far the easiest speed implementation in your build, as it’s just a rune change.

Sprint-Marathon can easily take the place of one of your skills. This is a huge boost to mobility. Gonna pay itself off in bounties, most especially.

Pound of Flesh is a cute passive that, when consistently maxed, gives a speed boost and a layer of brainless hp regen. Good for Nephs, but may require a more advanced build.

Items to look for

It’s time for the ENDLESS grind for the perfect items! Might of the Earth, luckily, has only very few core items

Blood ShardsDeath's BreathClassics

Using Blood Shards:

Where to spend your blood shards, loosely ordered by importance!

Boots: “Leap causes Earthquake“, Lut Socks “3 total leaps”. Hmm… Yeah, I heard that tripling your best spell is good. Without a doubt, this is the very first place I would dump shards. A dramatic increase in damage and mobility in one item!

Belt: (you can skip to bracer, check it out) Girdle of Giants is another DPS increase, at the somewhat annoying cost of making sure we Seismic Slam every few seconds. Goldwrap is great for speedfarming! Dread Iron is a decent filler…

Bracer: Ahhh some important stuff here. There are many usable items here… Nemesis Bracers is what I’d be looking for early on, for speedier farming. Ancient Parthan Defenders can be used in some of the endgame variants of the build. Skular’s Salvation, Bracers of Destruction have their uses. Bracers are pretty great!

After this – the usefulness of shards for the “25” tier is almost non-existent. Time to frustrate ourselves by spending on the 50 buck rings!

Ring: Bunch of great rings. Band of Might is the best defensive bonus we can get for one item. Unity is a close second! Compass Rose ain’t bad either. CoE is great to have.

Reminder on the Bounty rings: Ring of Royal Grandeur: from ACT I bounties is SUPER IMPORTANT for almost any Barb build. Avarice from Act III bounties, for speedfarming – might as well list it down here.

Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:

Without any doubt, upgrading 2H Mighty Weapon for Blade of the Tribes goes first. This item can more than triple your damage output! Keep in mind that you should avoid cubing this since it rolls with a natural Earthquake% up to 200!

The only downside to this is there are very few other useful 2HMW’s out there.. Fury of the Vanished Peak is the only other usable find.

Once you get Blade of the Tribes – fit the two Shouts in your build!

After this, 2H Mace for Furnace, which is part of the endgame build! Helping out versus elites is always welcome.

Since there’s very few core items, you can fish for Lut Socks using this method as well! You can also fish for any other legendary this way (Girdle of Giants if you don’t have it).

The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.

Ring of Royal Grandeur: “Break” your 6-piece to make space for a good filler item!

Accessory Sets: FocusRestraint or Traveler’s Pledge. Completing any of these 2-sets is a vast power jump. +100%++ is substantial for only 2 slots.

Convention of Elements: Good ‘ol CoE. Wear it, Kanai it, as a filler or till the end of time. Learning to maximize CoE in any build you choose is a turning point for higher GR’s.

Unity: Straight 50% damage reduction in the cube. Too bad you need two of ’em.

Goldwrap + Avarice + Boon of The Hoarder: I don’t care how many times I have to remind you about this combo. Be on the lookout. Avarice drops from ACT III bounties.

Once you have a lot of Whirlwind modifiers, you can drop Rend from the build.

Bridging to the End-game

So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

Luckily, the build we recommend above leads RIGHT INTO the Barb speedfarming build.

  1. the season 13 barbarian build is overpowered.I suggest pairing MOTE with a good rolled Fury of the Vanquished Peak + seismic slam % on items you can get it.Fun times and makes Seismic slam fun to play with plus all the earthquakes.
