Short discussion: Creeping Death is MANDATORY. I tried to cram as much defense as I practically could here, but feel free to adjust to your liking. Opening doors is a problem, hence Piranhas in the default build – but that slot is OPEN
Read the box below as to why you need Creeping Death.
So, now what!?
FROM HERE OUR GOAL IS TO GAIN POWER FAST. The next logical steps are Legendary Gems and being mindful of the good items you need to find.
A quick review before proceeding…
Gaining Power!
Legendary Gems
The next step is a “non-RNG” based way to increase your power by magnitudes. Legendary gems the next best thing you should chase for.
Get these three to L25 ASAP:
Bane of the Powerful can sit at 25 for a long time and you wouldn’t care! A great gem which gives massive bang for buck. 25 ASAP then get workin’ on the others.
Moratorium is a very good filler. It will help you push upwards since defense is what you’ll be lacking for quite a while. When you feel like it’s getting old, just use it for augments! Self-healing builds push this gem to absurd power levels! If you prefer more DPS gems, check the next tab. It will almost never make it to endgame builds, but that’s not where we are yet, right?
I highly recommend a double defensive gem setup for now! USE ESOTERIC ALTERATION for more defenses. Moratorium + Esoteric Alteration will ease up your squishiness quite a bit, while Trapped won’t really help you YET.
Bane of the Trapped fits in to “walking up to them and using Soul Harvest“. Worth every upgrade! Dump as many points into this as you can, after you get 3×25 gems. Only use this as a DPS gem when you really need it – as DPS isn’t a problem right now.
Any other gems worth it?
As Bane of the Powerful falls off in usefulness later on, feel free to use other gems!
Bane of the Stricken is good to own for any non-support build. While Haunt’s single target damage is pretty good, there will come a point in time where Stricken is just plain needed. When RG’s take a good few minutes – you know it’s time. It won’t be for a while, though.
Esoteric Alteration is great for the lategame, but as I mentioned in the previous tab defense is such an issue I would consider banging this one in early.
Boon of the Hoarder: You need this for speedfarming.
(See: Speedfarming General | Witch Doctor Speedfarming | Best WD Speedfarming Build)
Just go for efficient farming and cheap empowering to level these to L25 these! Try much higher Torment levels once you’re done. Now the real farming begins!
Playing the Build & Adjustments
Now that you have the base “power level” of your 6 set and gems, let’s take a short time to review How to Play the Build. Here’s some really basic tips for playing Jade Harvester to help you as you progress into higher difficulties. It’s by no means comprehensive, but still helpful.
Also, as you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.
Haunt to pull and gather.
Locust Swarm when they’re piling up.
Piranhado!
(optional: Spirit Walk in for invul), Soul Harvest.
Haunt Stragglers.
Repeat.
Haunt spam single target is crazy. It’s a bit annoying since the spirits aren’t super smart. Highlight the guy you wanna Haunt to be sure. Every enemy you engage should be Haunted, as it’s the main source of your damage.
Locust Swarm is slow and expensive, only use it on clumps which haven’t been swarmed and you’re about to Harvest.
Creeping Death keeps your dots on “forever” so sometimes just let ’em bleed out if they’re really low. This is much more prevalent in the early game. If you’re curious, “forever” means 5 minutes, lol. Oh Piranhado’s vulnerability is part of this forever, too.
Soul Harvesting puts you in danger. Spirit Walking in to get invulnerability is an obvious “workaround”. Luckily, Grave Injustice helps you spam this for both combat AND travelling. Value. Haunting reduces the CD of this in case you didn’t notice – which really contributes to your DPS.
More offense or Mana needed?
Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.
Rush of Essence is the best mana generator for us since we spam Haunt. It’s included in the base build and while you’re using it no other mana regen options are needed or should even be considered. You can remove this later on with some weird build evolutions but this will carry you hard for a long, long time (even forever).
Creeping Death is mandatory as I’ve mentioned in the build table.
As for other things, it’s very difficult to increase our DPS without some kind of penalty.
Locust Swarm damage actually sucks, which is why I recommend Cloud of Insects. It’s surprising how much Haunt does in comparison. Trying to increase Locust Swarm damage is a TRAP. Haunt represents more than 80% of the Soul Harvest burst, and over 99% of our single target spamming damage.
Haunt-Poisoned Spirits can seem good… but honestly, the Cold options are much, much more reliable since our Soul Harvest also shares an elemental rune with it.
Pierce the Veil is amazing if/when you can fit it in. The tiny mana gains you get from Grave Injustice actually helps a lot when picking this up without Rush of Essence.
More defense needed?
Defense is usually categorized in either Toughness or Self-healing capability.
The build is pretty tight and can’t really fit more defense in the skill bar. While you have great defensive passives, you also have quite a few important ones. I’ll just discuss a bit here…
Witch doctor’s main defense is modifying your Armor via Soul Harvest-Languish. It won’t work well if your base Armor rating is CRAP, so get those Armor rolls going. Spirit Walk-Jaunt is absurdly OP as you’re invul and Grave Injustice helps you out here. Leeching Beasts has been mentioned enough, but again, the self-healing is insane.
So please socket Rubies and Emerald on your body sockets, and get a few LpH rolls.
Swampland Attunement is king of defensive passives. Pickup radius is relevant for WD’s, if you haven’t noticed. Note that this doesn’t increase Lightning and Arcane resist. I recommend it in the base 4 passives since defense will be holding you back right now, not damage.
The only PRACTICAL defensive I can suggest is Horrify-Frightening Aspect. If you can fit it in your build, great.
Increasing your INT increases your Resists. So, augments and gearing up is a huge factor. In terms of your actual kit, there’s not much practical defenses you can gain…
More mobility needed?
Mobility and speed simply make farming faster. If you’re slightly newer, you may underestimate just how important this is!
Fierce Loyalty is too good. Brainless movespeed increase and it’s HUGE. I guess you can replace Swampland for speed, if you over gear the difficulty level.
Grave Injustice, included in the build, is fantastic with the build playstyle. You will always have Spirit Walk up after each chunk dies!
Any other changes for speed at this point is too greedy, and I can’t recommend it.

Items to look for
Okay now that the easy part of powering up is done, it’s time for the farmy bit. Here I will be listing all the high-impact items you can pick up, and how to get them (aside from drops).
Ring of Emptiness: It’s hard to fish for a ring via DB’s or Shards – but you must obtain this ring. AT ALL COSTS.
Using Blood Shards:
What slots to spend blood shards on, by loose order of “importance”.
Helm: The very first item to fish for and one of the very few core items of Harvester is none other than Quetzalcoatl (you MUST HAVE CREEPING DEATH PASSIVE). This basically doubles the DPS of your DoTs but halves the duration. Since our DoT’s are “infinite” – Straight up double damage with a single item.
Bracer: Lots of useful stuff here. Nemesis Bracers for speeds and Lakumba’s Ornament for tryharding. If Quetzalcoatl wasn’t so good, I’d go for bracers first!
Belt: has Haunting Girdle, among other things like Goldwrap and String of Ears. Haunting Girdle might feel a little underwhelming but the choices for tryhard belt slots are slim. Hwoj Wrap is not a bad defensive choice either.
Mojos are solid. Have a 1-hander to pair ’em up with! Uhkapian Serpent, Henri’s Perquisition and Thing of the Deep are all end-game viable! Vile Hive is a good early game boost.
From here, try your luck getting a Ring of Emptiness!
There’s lots of good rings out there (CoE, Unity, etc) so don’t feel bad “failing”.
There are some non-endgame fillers like Aquila Cuirass and Frostburn. Generic power bumps like Leoric’s Crown… nothing that relevant. You’re gonna need Royal Grandeur or a cube slot for ’em.
Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:
There are really only three weapons I want with this build:
- Sacred Harvester (from Ceremonial Dagger): I feel this is the correct choice 1st.
- The Furnace (from 2H Mace): The ultimate power jump for tryharding.
- Wormwood (from Staff): To allow a speedier build or save a skill slot.
Honestly, yeah, Sacred Harvester is just that good. Furnace and Wormwood are just luxuries compared to it. You’ll be wearing/cubing a mix of these 3 99% of the time.
If you’re desperate for Quetzalcoatl, you can try for it by upgrading Voodoo Masks! It’s a critical key component to our build! Don’t be stubborn if Kadala won’t give it to you!
Again, Ring of Emptiness is a one-slot jackpot. However, trying to obtain rings via Death’s Breath is not exactly the most pleasant of practices. This is a great “2nd goal”.
Mojos – have lots of defensive choices. Thing of the Deep, Henri’s Perquisition, Uhkapian Serpent are all end-game viable! ANY OF THESE THREE ARE AMAZING DEFENSIVELY. Here’s a short discussion on ’em:
- Thing of the Deep needs Swampland Attunement to be good.
- Uhkapian Serpents needs Zombie Dogs – Leeching Beasts to be good.
- Henri’s works out on its own, but isn’t so good in the early game.
The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.
Ring of Royal Grandeur: “Break” your 6-piece to make space for a good filler item! Or you know… Mask of Jeram! (Tasker and Theo, too)
Accessory Sets: Focus–Restraint or Traveler’s Pledge. Completing any of these 2-sets is a vast power jump. +100%++ is substantial for only 2 slots.
Convention of Elements: Good ‘ol CoE. Wear it, Kanai it, as a filler or till the end of time. Learning to maximize CoE in any build you choose is a turning point for higher GR’s.
Unity: Straight 50% damage reduction in the cube. Too bad you need two of ’em.
Just reminding you of the bounty rings:
– Ring of Royal Grandeur: Act I bounties, to fit all our greed.
– Avarice Band: Act III bounties, for speedfarming.
Goldwrap + Avarice + Boon of The Hoarder: I don’t care how many times I have to remind you about this combo.
Bridging to the End-Game
So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.
It’s highly likely you’ll transition into a PURE speedfarming build. If so, check out:

Also when is a good time to start replacing the season set? Like how much of an increase should the item be before I swap it in to replace a piece of the seasonal set?
What are your thoughts on the ancient legendary pig sticker? I got one with cdr skills 6%/reaource cost 10%/dmg to beasts 19%/dmg to humans 26%.
Pig sticker isn’t typically used by Witch Doctor. Sacred Harvester is a better all-purpose 1hander. It gets pretty insane once you augment it. But if you feel like it’s well rolled, save it.
Right after I posted about pig sticker I got the wormwood lol. That staff is so good I HAD to unequip it to complete the set dungeon. It would kill everything before I could do anything lol. Its gonna be hard to let this staff go.
Brilliant guide! Perfect and exactly what I needed for the new ladder.
Only suggestion would be advice to slowly transition into what looks like the most powerful build this season, which seems to be Jade Harvester.
I am using Z6 and have tried to follow this guide as closely as possible but I just can’t seem to get my fetishes up past 8. I am using haunt and I spam it liberally and move around and stuff. I tried acid rain but it just doesn’t work for me that well because it is not fire and forget like haunt (targeting issues) and I run out of mana so quickly and then stand there twiddling my thumbs. So not sure what I am missing because I am trying different things but since my gems got to 25 I can’t get past GR40 (T7) in time and that feels like I am behind the curve.
Advice? Suggestions? Appreciation in advance and thanx for the bitchin’ guide 🙂
last time I played diablo 3 was at the auction house disaster. Now I am back, taking a break from overwatch and the game completely change, without thinking about my build its already enormous,You helped me a lot and I really appreciate the time and effort you put on this.
Thank you very much
Thank you for your kind words! It’s what these guides are made for good sir!
Am I using acid cloud wrong if I am not getting Fetishes up to the passive max? I can do it easily with haunt but that is also much easier to spam.
Love yalls guides btw, third season using them and it is always great.
You’re absolutely correct and that’s why I mentioned both of those skills. Fetishes are much easier to gather with Haunt compared to Acid Rain. But alas, the Haunt coverage is pretty bad. Honestly there’s no way around suffering usability issues of Z6 early on.
What do you mean when you say Belt of Trans works along Fetish Sycophant? Is it that you get Fetishes up faster?
Yes, you get them up faster. Also, in the eventual Darts build keep in mind that the belt only triggers off SPENDERS. The Passive works with all attacks. It can be suboptimal to have them both, but in the early game – them working in tandem can be a load off your mind.
are you going to update this for Season 10 set ?
updated it last tues.
Ok nervermind, i send a post before but because I didnt know how the Kunai’s Cube works. Now I do (didnt play for a long time).
I have a doubt.
I just got the set of 6 free pc, but, before completing the set, I got the Quetzalcoatl, so it’s worth losing the 6 bonus level?
Thank you so much for this guidea. It helped me out a ton. I am new to seasonal and Diablo 3. I am confused when you say ‘GR 38 is enough to 25 a gem.’ Does that mean I need to get to GR38 to get a gem up to 25? Thanks again.
we’re glad we’re able to help you! 🙂 GR38 is enough to level a gem up to 25 with 100% success rate
what about paragon points?
hi! its just the basic paragon priorities.
Core – Primary stat > Vit > Move speed (depends, 25 points at most) > Max Resource (optional). all other points will be placed in primary
Offense – CHC > CHD > CDR > Attack Speed
Defense – Res All > Life > Armor > Life Regen
Utility – Area Damage > RCR > LoH > Gold Find
This needs updating for S8
yes sir… we are working on it! will post once its ready
Thanks for this awesome guide! Followed it with super success! Awesome looking forward to see more like this!
wow thats insane! Best guide ever found sofar! GJ !!
Which gems should you level ASAP? You list Zei’s, Powerful, and Trapped but only talk about Trapped and Enforcer which isn’t listed.
Oh ZEIS??? That’s a typo! Leave powerful @ 25 (level sparingly), dump points into Enforcer and Trapped. FIXED LGEM SECTION
So what do I do once Ive followed the above? Unless im missing something here all you do is talk about build and playstyle?
You can now start farming for items (getting ancient legendaries, death’s breath, materials for kanai-ing). Long term goals are up to you really. You can aim to climb the WD leaderboard, complete the season journey (shift+J) to get stash tab/s or just complete achievements (Y). It depends on you.
This guide is to help you somehow beef up your fresh 70 witch doctor, with or without the free set, so you could go clear higher torments asap. Once you’ve completed the above, you can even try other Witch doctor set builds or classes.
I can’t get any set pieces to drop from Izual in Torment 2. Is it just luck and RNG?
Is this your first class that you played this season? If yes, you should get the 2nd free set in your mailbox right after you kill Izual.
In the build you said ” I see it as unnecessary” where you talking about the ‘Locust Swarm’ or the ‘Corpse Spiders’ skill?
Technically both are lol. Use Spiders if you have mana problem and Locust Swarm or any other if you don’t.
