Fresh 70 Demon Hunter: Getting the Free Set!

Marauder has ZERO problems with KILLING THINGS.
It DOES have problems GETTING KILLED, though.
So take a semi defensive spin on your filler gear.

That being said, given how powerful Marauder is, this will be a joke.

Fresh 70 Demon Hunter: 6pc Free Set Build

Note: Marauder has no problem with offense. You will struggle with “on-paper survivability”, and usability issues (Hatred, Sentries). Topaz on Helmet isn’t a bad idea for now.

S10 DH Fresh 70 Marauder 6pc Build
Skill Rune
Evasive Fire Focus
Multishot (Any M6 Spender) Arsenal
Sentry Polar Station
Companion ALL in effect
Vault Tumble
Preparation Punishment
Leech (Semi Open) Blood Vengeance
Custom Engineering Ballistics (Open)

Choose whatever spender you like! The best ones EARLY ON are Multishot-Arsenal, Chakram – Rune of choice, and Elemental Arrow – Frost Arrow.

FROM HERE, OUR GOAL IS TO GAIN POWER FAST. The next logical steps are Legendary Gems, and being mindful of the good items you need to find.

A quick review before proceeding…

Keep these important things in mind as you progress!

Non-set pieces: Review

Gaining Power!

Now we have to gain as much power, as quickly as possible. The first place to look is Legendary Gems, as well as keeping an eye out for critical items.

Legendary Gems

This is the easiest way to gain power simply because acquiring them has little to no RNG. Getting 3 of your best gems will increase your power dramatically in a short time span.

Click on the tabs to see Marauder “Big 3” gems, and “others”.

Demon Hunter Marauder 6 Fresh 70: Big 3 GemsOther gems?

Get these three to L25 ASAP:

Bane of the Powerful: Value of the heavens. For 25 gem levels you have a “maxed out” gem, which does some heavy DPS lifting. The defensive component is welcome since we’re in the wet tissue tier of toughness.

Bane of the Trapped: A great DPS gem that almost every build uses. Invest as many points as you can here.

A defensive gem of choice: EARLY ON, Moratorium (L25 is enough) is great and will give you the largest power boost of any other gem, and you can use it for augments when you switch to Esoteric Alteration. Or just go Esoteric straight up.

It’s actually Leech (passive) that will carry your self-healing, but self-healing is meaning without mitigation. On that note, by default, M6 MITIGATION is crap.

Any other gems worth it?

Bane of the Stricken: Is mandatory for high level GRifting. You’re gonna want to dump any excess points into this.

Esoteric Alteration: Is our late game defensive gem of choice.

Zei’s Stone of Vengeance: is an option for when going ultra glass cannon.

Boon of the Hoarder: You need this for speedfarming.
(See: Speedfarming General, Demon Hunter Speedfarming Primer, Best DH Speedfarming)

Just get them asap while slowly climbing the GR’s you’re allowed to do. Do neph/GR/neph/GR etc until you get the big 3. Don’t overdo the level, just go for efficient farming and cheap empowering. GR 34 is enough to 25 a gem.

With 3 of your best gems at L25 – try much higher Torment levels (VIII at least). So now the real farming begins! From here on, obliterating elites is still the gameplan. You’ll still face problems with mobs, and you might need to put a little mind on defense, too.

Playing the Build & Adjustments

Now that you have the base “power level” of your 6 set and gems, let’s take a short time to review How to Play the Build. Here’s some really basic tips for playing Marauder to help you as you progress into higher difficulties. It’s by no means comprehensive, but still helpful.

Also, as you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.

Here, we discuss Playstyle Notes and build Build Adjustments. But there’s not gonna be much to say, as Marauder is an extremely narrow set to build around!

Playing M6 - BasicsOffense & ResourceDefense & HealingSpeed & Mobility

There’s no lack of power in this build. Seriously. Sentries make you stronger. Sentries copy your skills. You have every Companion up. If you’re AFK, you can kill stuff.

But Marauder does come with some problems. Mainly “Muh Sentries aren’t shooting the same guys I am!“. Know this – Never let your 3 Sentries be on cooldown. So the moment your third Sentry is available – use it. Why?

Sentries increase YOUR damage. Your speed of killing things means you’ll inevitably ditch your Sentries. But that’s OK as long as YOU are buffed. If you try too hard to gain value from Sentries shooting enemies – you’ll end up losing value.

Here’s a priority:

  • Always have 3 (or max) Sentries out to buff YOU. No excuses.
  • Add Sentries in the mix when fighting huge packs or elites.
  • Spacing out Sentry casts means you’ll never have to dump Hatred all at once. Spaced casts mean a more fluid playstyle. Casting 3 at once means you’ll have to cast 3 at once some time down the line…

There it is. That’s how you play M6 right there. Of course there’s such cheeses as placing Sentries across ravines, on ledges and other skullduggery that you’ll learn along the way.

WHAT SPENDER? Multishot-Arsenal and Chakram-Razor Disk are the best as a fresh DH. You’re free to experiment, but those two are my personal preferences.

Wait for the rockets to hit! This right here will save you tons of Hatred. Leaving low-hp stragglers to your follower, Sentry and Companions is more efficient that shooting them, too.

Sentry-Polar Station is the late-game choice due to CC. This comes with another mini skill-set in Sentry placement to protect yourself and CC mobs most efficiently. (Chokepoints, cast on self as a “slow shield” etc).

Companion has many effects when you press it. Wolf and Bat are the main effects you’re after. Luckily, pressing it when you’re about to kill elites is some pretty good value. Last I heard, Hatred+ and DMG+ for one button is value.

More offense or Hatred /Discipline needed?

Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.

Okay so, Marauder 6, especially in this stage of the game… You’ve noticed that you have no problem killing. Were “practically maxed” on offense…

Vengeance and Marked for Death are the only other practical offensive skills you can add to the build. Of the two mentioned, we will be using Vengeance once we get Dawn.

There’s a lot you can do regarding offensive passives, but I guess the best to mention are: Ambush Cull the Weak (+Thrill of the Hunt if needed) > Steady Aim > Archery.

As a reminder, Custom Engineering should NEVER BE REMOVED as it single handedly obliterates any offensive passive choice.

This segment is a little thin… again, there’s not much to be said regarding offense.

How about Hatred generation? We use Companion (which automatically gets Bat), and Preparation-Punishment. Blood Vengeance is also an option. ALL OF WHICH are suggested in the base build.

The only other resource build adjustment I’d consider is Night Stalker.

More defense needed?

Defense is usually categorized in either Toughness or Self-healing capability.

Leech is a godlike passive in any point of the game to get sick healing. This passive is not a joke – if healing is your problem, this right there is the SOLUTION.

Sentry-Polar Station is deceptively powerful. The slow field decreases your damage taken by allowing easier kiting! In 99% of cases, during solo play, it is better than Guardian Turret. It also triggers Bane of the TrappedThrill of the Hunt is similar. These permanent Slow is a large indirect boost to survivability.

Smoke Screen – has its ups and downs vs Vault. “Vault vs. Smoke Screen” is a mini debate that gets discussed every so often – try out which one is best for you.

Numbing Traps is a legit choice if you’re in desperate need of survivability.

Other options seem subpar – Demon Hunters aren’t known for built-in defenses, and Marauder is the only DH set with zero defensive set bonuses.

More mobility needed?

This early on, Mobility and Speed shouldn’t be the focus of your build. It’s a luxury for a Fresh 70 Demon Hunter. Marauder, in particular, is the least speedy of Demon Hunter builds.

Vault-Tumble is already recommended in the build. More Tumbles – more distance traveled. This popular rune is a mainstay for both movement and defense.

Tactical Advantage ties in greatly with Vault. It’s the single most speedy change for the low cost of one passive.

Any other changes for speed at this point is too greedy, and I cant recommend it.

Items to look for

Okay now that the easy part of powering up is done, it’s time for the farmy bit. Here I will be listing all the high-impact items you can pick up, and how to get them (aside from drops).

Blood ShardsDeath's BreathClassics
Using Blood Shards:

Belts: You got 2 mega jackpots here. Zoey’s Secret is the first. This is ONE OF THE HIGHEST DEFENSIVE BONUS FOR A SINGLE ITEM AVAILABLE IN THE ENTIRE GAME. Slap it on and don’t think twice. The other mega value bomb here is Hellcat Waistguard. Once you get this, you can switch up your main spender to Cluster Arrow-Cluster Bombs.

Quivers: Speaking of quivers, one stands above all else for the Marauder set: Bombardier’s Rucksack. However, the chance to bag a specific quiver is quite low. There are quite a few fillers out there.

BracersNemesis Bracers and Wraps of Clarity are pure value.

ChestCloak of the Garwulf is amazing paired up with Zoey’s Secret, and makes for a fine filler. Cindercoat is a great filler as long as you use a fire rune (surprise surprise!)

Head: has some niche fillers like Visage of Gunes, and Leoric’s Crown

Again reminding you of the bounty rings:
Ring of Royal Grandeur: Act I bounties, to fit all our greed.
Avarice Band: Act III bounties, for speedfarming.

Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:

Upgrade 2H Crossbows for Manticore yeah, Manticore does it ALL. ALL! While the legendary power is great enough (half the cost on CA!), Manticore has a “secret roll” of +Cluster Arrow% that goes up to 80%. So basically this weapon gives us a pseudo “6~ rolls of skill damage” and “10~ rolls of RCR”.

Upgrade 1H Crossbows for Dawn, which allows permanent uptime on Vengeance with a bit of CDR. It’s obviously very powerful. We can choose either Seethe or Dark Heart to help us out with various weak points in our build.

Upgrade Quivers for Bombardier’s Rucksack. +2 Sentries is +2400% damage. Sick. While this sounds amazing to go for first, I think Manticore is more important to go for first, Dawn and this are roughly equal.

Each of these categories come with many great fillers to don’t feel so bad if you don’t get what you want right away. (Yang’s RecurveFortress BallistaAugustine’s Panacea).

The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.

Ring of Royal Grandeur: “Break” your 6-piece to make space for a good filler item!

Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac: Infinite Resource with Preparation-Punishment, Vengeance… a great “filler” ring that can allow you to “cheat” past proper gear rolls on CDR.

Accessory Sets: FocusRestraint or Traveler’s Pledge. Completing any of these 2-sets is a vast power jump. +100%++ is substantial for only 2 slots.

Convention of Elements: Good ‘ol CoE. Wear it, Kanai it, as a filler or till the end of time. Learning to maximize CoE in any build you choose is a turning point for higher GR’s.

Unity: Straight 50% damage reduction in the cube. Too bad you need two of ’em.

Goldwrap + Avarice + Boon of The Hoarder: I don’t care how many times I have to remind you about this combo. Be on the lookout. Avarice drops from ACT III bounties.

Bridging to the End-game

So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

  1. Meticulous Bolts is no longer in game, it has been replaced by Augustine’s Panacea. Other than that great site and great guides, I am feeling a sudden urge to remake sevral of my toons when ever I see the guides here.

  2. Hi, I’m getting piece 3 and 4 from “The Shadow Mantle” set. I’m using 1H sword in weapon slot 1 and slot 2 (off-hand), I can’t use anything (because all 1H). Since we need Karlei’s Point and Dawn later on. We should able to use dagger or sword/crossbow (both 1H) together. Why I can’t do it now. Did I overlook something ?

  3. Holy wow. I stalled at Expert level because I didn’t understand the 2 set bonus. I went from weakling to god in a few steps by reading this. I owe you one.

  4. I was lucky to find “Thunderfury…” leg sword early in season, so when I extracted its Kanai power, it became a nice step to making Impale more anti-group oriented than before 🙂 that lightning damage
