Fresh 70 Demon Hunter? If you’re wondering how to proceed and how to get your free set ASAP – look no further. Beating the Seasonal Journey, getting your Haedrig’s Gift, Builds, Items to look for – ITS ALL HERE in our Fresh level 70 DH Guide!

In Season 23, the Demon Hunter free set is: Unhallowed Essence. Luckily The Seasonal Journey with Unhallowed Essence is pretty easy compared to most!

Updated Apr 15 2021: Added mentions of Follower Guide where applicable.

Season 23 and YOU. How does it affect?

This season’s “theme” is the Follower buff + emanate items. I’m guessing it will be a permanent addition from after this season.

This mainly affects farming speed. While the follower buff skills make them more relevant in tryharding GR’s, it is by no means game-breaking.

Essentially, this season unlocks
NEW HEIGHTS FOR SPEEDFARMING

I highly recommend checking out our Follower Guide (Builds, Item, Skills etc).

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Fresh 70: The first step – setting up!

The very first step of your journey! Here, I discuss items, rerolls, and basic advice to keep in mind during your ascent.

Yellow items - stats - rerolls - gems

Craft a Reaper’s Wraps ASAP. For this build, more than most, resource generation will be an issue. Plans drop from any Torment Malthael, and you should get the bounty mats soon enough.

WEAPON: Craft or find a “2H” Crossbow (Not a hand crossbow). The stats you want are DEX VIT LpH or Socket (Purple gem for LpH, Red for DMG+, Green for CHD+). Avoid any other stat for now. You also want a good Quiver, which can roll a variety of stats to help cover your bases.

DH is an DEX Class – meaning you get free ARMOR from all the DEX on your gear. This results in a huge lack of ALL RESISTS. So, in your reroll strategy REMOVE ALL ARMOR ROLLS as they’re pretty much USELESS – and replace them with ALL RESISTS. ALLRES is your best defensive stat by a LARGE MARGIN. Socket Diamonds to get ALLRES!

SELF HEALING: Life per Hit is integral for your early game survival. Having a roll or two is always nice. Note that I often recommend using Leech passive which grants a decent amount of LpH, having it on your gear early on helps, too.

GEMS: For body pieces you’ll want Diamonds for ALLRES. Helm may vary (Topaz for resource cost reduction, Amethyst for Life%, Diamond for Cooldown Reduction) depending on your needs. Early game, nothing beats Topaz IMO.

Rings and Amulet: You NEED sockets on these to prep for legendary gems. Get any stat on these that you feel you’re missing. Feeling soft? Get defenses. Need DPS? Crit and mainstat. Feel free to roll “random helpful stats” on these for now, instead of the usual endgame CHC/CHD/MAINSTAT.

The above notes are most important.
Anything below this chunk is useful, but not critical.
(UE Seasonal journey isn’t too difficult)

Belt: Is a huge source of defense. DEX > VIT > RES > Life%. You’ll be surprised how a single item can give you a whole load of toughness. Note that primary skill percent rolls here, too. Sad.

Quiver: Anything with DEX VIT, and any other “passable” stat.

Arms, Boots, Head, Shoulder? You’ll get them for free easily, so you don’t really need to get temporary yellows here.

Elemental% can be found on Bracers and Amulets. You ideally want it on both. Fire% is what you’re going for here as it’s the element you want later on.

Skill% can be found on Boots and Helm. Multishot% should almost always be on boots. Having it on Helm comes at a huge cost to minus a huge chunk of VIT, so you might wanna hold onto that.

Chest / Legs: DEX VIT ALLRES Sockets (3/2). Life% isn’t bad either. Don’t try too hard here since you’ll be replacing them once you get your 6pc set.

Getting the “correct” stats beats getting the “perfect” stats for now. REMOVE USELESS STATS and get any USEFUL STAT for massive gains in power.

Remove useless stats

  • Life Regeneration – garbage.
  • Attack Speed – it usually an endgame tune-up stat.
  • Excessive Resource Cost Reduction – Is a crutch, and only niche builds need it.
  • Excessive Cooldown Reduction – Only useful for an endgame “need”.
  • Armor – Useless for us, take ALLRES instead.

Take better stats

  • DEX VIT – can’t go wrong with these. Your core stats!
  • ALLRES Life% – Great defensive stats.
  • Life per Hit – Great early game sustainability.
  • CRIT Stats (CHC / CHD) – More for endgame, but I’d take this over garbage stats.

You’ll get “bonus” healing and resource generation from Templar, so make sure you drag him along. Get a pet out, too, to collect those coins to upgrade the NPCs in town

You have to ALWAYS BE AWARE of how your FOLLOWER can greatly affect farming speed! S23 introduced the “full build” and emanate system – keeping items important for your Follower Farming Build is high priority!

0pc (Fresh 70 DH) No free set – getting the 2pc

Getting 1st Haedrigs Gift

For clarity this box contains info and builds if you currently have 0 pcs of the UE free set, going for 2 (you don’t have any Haedrigs gift bag, going for the first).

Demon Hunter Fresh 70 No Set Build
Skill Rune
Evasive Fire Focus
Multishot Arsenal
Preparation Punishment
Companion Bat
Sentry Spitfire Turret
Vault Tumble
Passives
Ambush Leech
Ballistics Blood Vengeance

My favorite “el basic” DH build kinda looks like UE already right? This build feels pretty good already with zero items.

If you have a powerful legendary – edit the build to accommodate it if needed.

*Pressing Shift+J (PC) opens up your Seasonal Journey tracker!*

The entries in these early chapters are dead easy. The build above gives you a good balance of offense, defense and speed built in to help you breeze through this as mindlessly as possible.

Hard Mode on for Chapters 1 & 2. Clear through all the entries on Hard. Just up the difficulty to complete one Neph on Expert.

Don’t forget to level up all the NPCs in town. Completing your weekly Challenge Rift will help you get resources to do this easily, if you haven’t already.

When you’re done here, get your first free set from your mail, and proceed onward.

2pc Unhallowed Essence free set – getting the 4pc

Getting 2nd Haedrigs Gift

For clarity this box contains builds and info if you currently have 2 pcs of the UE free set, going for 4 (you have the first Haedrigs gift bag, going for the second).

S23 Demon Hunter Fresh 70 2pc UE free set build
Skill Rune
Evasive Fire Focus
Multishot Arsenal
Preparation Punishment
Companion Bat
Sentry Spitfire Turret
Vault Tumble
Passives
Ambush Leech
Ballistics Blood Vengeance

No change to build. The 2pc set bonus of UE is pretty unexciting. It only makes our generators make more Hatred and a little bit of Discipline. If you want to change something up, my suggestion would be Companion – Bat, as you might overflow on resource now?

If you have a powerful legendary – edit the build to accomodate it if needed.

*Pressing Shift+J (PC) opens up your Seasonal Journey tracker!*

Difficulty: Although there are entries here that need to be finished on Master, you can still complete the bounty cache, if you haven’t already, on Hard. For the bounty, try to do the whole five acts as you’ll need to do this down the line anyway.

These entries are still on the easy side, so we can be a little lax with our build making as little sacrifices as possible to retain good DPS, Speed and some thought to defense. When you’re done with this chapter, collect your 2nd set of free set and let’s finish the next chapter for the remaining free gear!

4pc Unhallowed Essence free set – getting the 6pc

For clarity the next boxes contains builds and info if you currently have 4pcs of the UE free set, going for 6 (you have the first + second Haedrigs gift bag, going for the third). This segment is further divided into three parts – Torment II, Torment IV, and GR20.

Torment II seasonal journey entries

Torment I-II and general stuff
S23 Demon Hunter Fresh 70 2pc UE free set build
Skill Rune
Evasive Fire Focus
Multishot Arsenal
Preparation Punishment
Companion Bat
Sentry Spitfire Turret
Vault Tumble
Passives
Ambush Leech
Ballistics Blood Vengeance

No changes! Yep. As unexciting as it seems, the build doesn’t need to change at all. The only thing you need to remember is to activate the 4pc UE set bonus by distancing yourself from enemies every few seconds. Don’t worry you don’t need to stay far always, it triggers the moment you’re out of range and you gain the buff for a set duration.

Upgrade a Rare to Legendary w/ Kanai’s Cube: You got 2 choices here. You can start the hunt for Yangs Recurve by upgrading 2h Bows. Alternatively, more experienced demon hunters might choose to craft a 1h Dagger for either Karleis or Greenstones – this trivializes the rest of the journey if you’re feeling RNG was being particularly bad to you.

Complete a Torment I Rift: This will be the minimum level you should be farming at should you need to do it. Increase if you can easily obliterate a rift. There’s also a “Kill a Torment II Boss” entry here which should be easy.

Complete any other odds and ends that you can, before proceeding to Torment IV.

Torment IV seasonal journey entries

Torment IV stuff

(build template in the Torment II tab)

In Torment IV things get real. For many of the free sets, this place is the breakpoint wether your build needs help or not. And for S23 and UE, it’s not that bad…

  • Kill Odeg – Keywarden in ACT I, Fields of Misery.
  • Kill Sokahr – Keywarden in ACT II, Dahlgur Oasis.
  • Kill Xah’Rith – Keywarden in ACT III, Stonefort.
  • Kill Nekarat – Keywarden in ACT IV, Gardens of Hope 2nd Tier.
  • Kill Specific Boss Check your journal to see who it is this season.
  • Keywardens maps have a key icon next to the waypoint. Purple arrows point you to their location after a short while once you’re in their respective map.

For the boss and all Keywardens – STRAIGHT UP RUSH TO THEM!
Ignore ALL TRASH and just beeline! Get it done ASAP!

You’ll really notice the if you’ve neglected your temporary yellow gear and rerolls. Hopefully you have powerful legendary to carry you (and even if you do), you will notice if you’ve neglected your gear. Refer to the very top setting up tab if you need help.

Either way, this is a good time to take a closer look at your items and get as many powerups and rerolls stated in the setting up tab above.

4pc UE Free Set GR20

Spoiler title

NO BUILD CHANGES. If you’re worried about DPS, slot in Custom Engineering passive. The passive you might want to remove is Leech (dangerous if your self-healing sucks), or Blood Vengeance (If you’re confident in your resource management).

You should have an idea of how strong you are given the drops (or lack thereof) you’ve gotten. Be practical and don’t be afraid to shore up your build a little. If you feel a little weak – Do 4 quick Nephs, then do 4 GR10+.

The “ultimate” challenge gating you to getting your full six piece free set! The difficulty varies wildly on your class and seasonal set. As someone who has cleared with EVERY SINGLE SET AND CLASS WITHOUT ANY OTHER LEGENDARY OR TAKING ANY PYLONS – let me tell you, they’re not all created equal.

FROM HERE OUR GOAL IS TO GAIN POWER FAST. The next logical steps are Legendary Gems, and being mindful of the good items you need to find.

Build notes / reminders

  • Crafted Reapers Wraps is godly this early on.
  • Diamonds on chest/legs, Topaz on Helm.
  • Reroll off the trash stats, get the decent ones.
  • GEAR UP YOUR FOLLOWER. Sage Set, Gloves of Worship etc.
  • Vengeance – Seethe and Companion – Bat are open skills. There’s not many other choices though. Vengeance will worm its way into your build later on surely with Dawn. Companion – Boar is a nice alternative to Bat for some survivability.
  • Follower build and items are IMPORTANT!

Keep in mind the important rerolls I mentioned at the start of this guide. Also, before you proceed, here’s a preview / reminder/ of items you need to look for.

Core items preview - look out for these!

Arranged loosely by how I would try to get them:

Slot Name Notes
2h Bow Yang’s Recurve
CORE! Super RCR and DPS. Use Deaths Breaths to find.
Bracer Wraps of Clarity
Defenses. From Blood Shards
Ring Ring of Royal Grandeur
From ACT I Bounty
Belt Captain Crimson
Crafted, need RoRG. All useful stats!
Legs Captain Crimson
Crafted, need RoRG. All useful stats!
Quiver Deadman’s Legacy
Great DPS boost.
Ring Focus
Great DPS boost.
Ring Restraint
Great DPS boost.

As implied, these are the items that are core, or important, to your build. I talk more about how to obtain these later on – remember to keep these in mind always.

At the very bottom of this guide, you can preview what a good base template build is for items / skills / passives to get an idea what you’re going for.

Powering Up: Legendary Gems

Your next step after getting your 6pc is Legendary Gems. Why? LGems are a huge power spike relying on very little RNG. Simply spam Neph -> GR until you get the three gems you need and power them up to 25.

UE Main useful gemsOther useful gems

Bane of the Powerful – Keep it at 25. Great gem for the early game. Caps out its power at L25 so you’re never really sad to start off with this. Switch this out later on.

Zeis Strone of Vengeance + Bane of the Trapped: The more “serious” DPS gems. You’ll want one or both of these leveled up later on.

Need defensive gems?

Early on, you can opt to take one or two defensive gems to help shore up your squishiness. Moratorium is a godlike early defensive choice (especially with your Leech passive), as well as Esoteric Alteration, which scales way into late game.

Bane of the Stricken – is the go to LATE GAME DPS Gem of choice. Its main use is shortening your Rift Guardian time (and helping out vs yellow elites).

Esoteric Alteration – is probably the best defensive gem in the game, and is worth having a strong one around.

Boon of the Hoarder – is used in many speedfarming builds alongside Avarice Band.

Again, Legendary Gems are a massive priority given their NON-RNG powerspike. Just having three useful gems at 25 will allow you farm a few torment levels higher.

Powering Up: Important Items & how to get them

Of course, any build will need a couple (or more than a couple) items to round out. Here, I list down what items you’re looking for, and how best to get them using various currencies and means.

Bounties? Do them early for your follower!

While looked down on for many seasons, Bounties are actually amazing in the early game these days – why?

Great items and recipes for your follower to improve farming! Recipes for Sage’s Bounty and Cain’s Destiny. As well as bounty specific value items like Gloves of Worship.

Ring of Royal Grandeur is an ACT I only bounty item, and is CORE to UE’s build to accommodate the Crimson 3pc set bonus.

Avarice Band is always welcome for speedfarming. Its an ACT III bounty item.

While some builds may not need RoRG, everyone would definitely want Sage to help out with Deaths Breath so doing a few bounties are a good idea.

Blood ShardsDeaths BreathRings and AmuletsThe Classics

Here’s advice on how to spend your blood shards with Kadala, roughly in order of importance.

Bracers – Wraps of Clarity: Much needed defenses. In this pile you’ll also find good ‘ol Nemesis Bracers for your follower.

Chest – Cindercoat: A great early game cube option that you may want to slot in every now and then. Offers a massive reduction for the cost on fire skills, works wonders if you don’t have your Yangs yet.

Quiver – Deadman’s Legacy: Just a great DPS boost overall, not so important to try and get first since I think defense will be a problem first.

Rings > Amulet? Are hard to get from shards. While I may bite the bullet and try to get rings, I don’t recommend trying amulets at all (Focus + Restraint)

Other items? Since you’re aiming to get Captain Crimson, there aren’t many things

Here’s advice on how to get your weapons from Deaths Breath rare item upgrades, roughly in order of importance.

2h Bow – Yangs Recurve: A godlike addition to your build. Making your stronger, use less resources, and multishot faster. Just so much value rolled into one. Thankfully there are some usable fillers here in case you “miss”. Seriously dump all your DB’s into this before anything else.

Quiver for Deadmans Legacy is also viable with DB’s if you’re overflowing.

Rings can be tough to fish out but if you already got everything else you may as well try to get your Focus and Restraint here.

Rings and Amulets are tough to get from either BS or DB’s (due to the large amount of possible outcomes), but if you’re done getting your core items from them – and you haven’t got your core accessories, it’s a viable way to spend them.

Ring of Royal Grandeur is super important for your build to add Captain Crimson, and these only drop from Act I bounty caches. IIRC DB’s or BS will never spawn them.

Focus + Restraint: Try to get this from both your shards and breaths if you can’t spend them on anything else (IE you’re just missing them).

Amulet? Honestly, any well rolled amulet works. You don’t really NEED a certain amulet and godlike stats are more valuable than legendary powers. Hellfire Amulet is a great option.

Typically you’ll just find these as you grind, as they can be difficult to obtain with currency…

This is just a list of your “all-around” items that may or may not be mentioned previously. While I do not take set-specifics in this tab, it serves as a seasonal reminder (and helpful general list for newbies) on what’s “generally good”.

Reapers Wraps: A Crafted legendary whose plans drop from any Torment Malthael (and is oft mentioned in our Fresh 70 guides), any NON-RNG boost to power (in this case, resource generation) is welcome. MOST builds can benefit from an early reapers.

Nemesis Bracers: An absolute monster for increasing rift clear speed (and a little extra deaths breaths!), newer players might not value this as highly – try it out and you’ll be surprised.

Unity: Used alongside another Unity on your follower (Plus their unique “Cannot Die” relic) essentially halving all damage you take for one ring slot, that’s usable for any character. Not bad.

Obisidian Ring of the Zodiac: Core on many builds, but usable for any build that spends resource. It’s a unique source of “in-combat” CDR that would give you 100% uptime on skills you couldn’t otherwise achieve. It’s pretty crazy.

Focus+Restraint: If you can trigger both halves of the set bonus, and don’t mind losing defenses from rings – this is will “more than double” your DPS.

Travellers Pledge + Compass Rose: Another accessory set, this one is more suited for “elite killer” builds that like to travel in between packs, and face-tanking builds that tend to stay still while DPSing. It’s not very universal, but it can reasonably benefit any character.

Convention of Elements: Literally any character can use this ring. It’s a titanic boost in DPS (especially for builds that have tons of short-duration buffs… LINE THEM UP!).

Ring of Royal Grandeur: -1 set item requirements to help you fit random core or filler legendaries to help your build out. While absolutely necessary on some builds, most builds can benefit from this using “generic” legendaries for a temporary power boost (IE Aquilla Cuirass).

Avarice Band + Boon of the Hoarder (+Goldwrap) the gold farming speedy holy trinity. While you don’t really need all three all the time, this combo allows you to speed through and survive ANY difficulty (careful, this doesn’t improve DPS!).

You also need specific items for your follower build, which again, has a huge impact on your farming speed.

Bridging to the End-game, other links

Not all of these links are updated to S23 yet!
But, they will serve as a decent resource nonetheless in the meantime

So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

  1. You keep mentioning to get the dagger, yet you never really provide any info on how to use it. Mentioning it all the time and saying how easy the game is after getting the dagger is extremely annoying, because i got the dagger and i can’t figure out what to do. Guide BTW..

    • Each dagger modifies one skill. Either you got Impale, or Fan of Knives. Simply edit your build to include one of these.

Impale dagger – change your spender to Impale.

Fan of Knives – remove any utility skill to include FoK.

The daggers aren’t multi-item or build specific, they only need a single skill to be added to the build.

The skill of editing your build is something you’ll gain as you play more, as it’s impossible to account for every kind of item you will get. I will add this to the write0up, though as you’re absolutely correct in the sense others may be confused on how to use these daggers, as straightforward as it may be.

  2. Hi, the 1H mace. I cannot use with the 1H bow. Any suggestions. Thanks and great guide for new players like me.

  3. So i have killed the Keywarden over and over and have killed Urzael over and over im not getting any credit in the season jerny at all im on the right difficulty and everything. wtf?!

  4. Is there something missing(/wrong) in “Items to look for” (” [/su_tabs] “)? Usually there’s Blood Shards, Death’s Breath and classic section. Cheers for the guides anyway!

  5. I was lucky to find “Thunderfury…” leg sword early in season, so when I extracted its Kanai power, it became a nice step to making Impale more anti-group oriented than before 🙂 that lightning damage

  6. Holy wow. I stalled at Expert level because I didn’t understand the 2 set bonus. I went from weakling to god in a few steps by reading this. I owe you one.

  7. Hi, I’m getting piece 3 and 4 from “The Shadow Mantle” set. I’m using 1H sword in weapon slot 1 and slot 2 (off-hand), I can’t use anything (because all 1H). Since we need Karlei’s Point and Dawn later on. We should able to use dagger or sword/crossbow (both 1H) together. Why I can’t do it now. Did I overlook something ?

  8. Meticulous Bolts is no longer in game, it has been replaced by Augustine’s Panacea. Other than that great site and great guides, I am feeling a sudden urge to remake sevral of my toons when ever I see the guides here.
