Natalya’s Vengeance is season 16’s free set.

It is also the SEASON OF GRANDEUR – meaning all characters have the effects of
Ring of Royal Grandeur applied!

How does Season of Grandeur affect me?

In GeneralBiggest winners?

It doesn’t affect your leveling process or “early process” of being level 70. The free RoRG effect only really takes place once you have 3/5/6+ of a set – with heavy implications on full end-game builds.

This guide is not about that, but I can give you a heads up about this season’s effects.

There are two possible outcomes of a free RoRG in any build.

  1. You have space for a filler item. Builds that DO NOT USE OR NEED RoRG simply gain a space for ONE MORE LEGENDARY EFFECT. This is the “minimum” effect of this season, but should not be underestimated. Any build can benefit from, for example, Aquila Cuirass or Nemesis Bracer.
  2. You gain an accessory slot. Builds that NATURALLY NEED RoRG will open up a space for another accessory. Usually resulting in the addition of CoE and/or Zodiac in your build which is ALWAYS ABSURDLY POWERFUL.

Ideally, something absolutely broken happens. I can’t account for every possibility because the community always surprises me – but one thing’s for sure… the effects of season of grandeur can be condensed into one of those two scenarios.

Fresh 70 Demon Hunter: Getting the Free Set!

You can CRAFT AND USE REAPER’S WRAPS for a huge boost!

IMPORTANT: Setting up!

BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE: Natalya’s is a tough build to play right. If you have experience with the build in the past, this will be much much easier for you. Natalya’s is one of the most mechanically challenging builds to PROPERLY pull off!

As such – I’ll be putting in some ‘crutchy’ skills or passives to help you along. But if you can “Keep Aquila up 99% of the time while weaving Evasives into Strafe”, you’re good to go and feel free to re-adjust the builds. But I highly doubt many of us are at this point (I was not when I first tried it – and I can’t say I haven’t gotten rusty). Learn more about it here

Fresh 70 Demon Hunter Items needed: You’ll be surprised how effective finding/crafting and rerolling yellow items are. These guys work hard until you get a full legendary build – so you might as well be carrying decent ones.

Dexterity is the main stat for DH, together with Vit. These are the basic stats you’re after. Since DH’s are a DEX char, you gain DAMAGE+ARMOR from DEX. What you don’t get is RESISTS that’s why ALL RESISTS will be your BEST DEFENSIVE STAT.

Weapon: Get a good 2H Crossbow! Dex + Vit are must have stats! Life per Hit will greatly help you as you progress! Having socket on it is very flexible, too. Allowing you to socket Amethyst for Life per Hit or Red/Green for damage.

Quiver: DEX VIT are a must. There are a lot of great stats possible on quiver but above all else, this early on, +HATRED REGEN is king.

Shoulder: THIS ONE’s IMPORTANT! It’s gonna be a while until you get a shoulder because NATALYA’S HAS NO SHOULDER PIECE. So tryhard and get a DEX>VIT>ALLRES>Life or something. Gotta stack those defensives!

Jewelry with socket: Rings and amulets with a socket in preparation for legendary gems! Don’t feel bad to roll defensive stats on temporary rings.

Belt: With DEX VIT RES (Life%) – you need all the defense you can get. Besides, you’ll be using this alllll the way until you get Crashing Rain, so trying hard on a yellow is ok.

Bracer and Amulet: Lightning% is a must on these. Elemental damage percent are the two rerolls in the game with the highest damage output given. Little effort for large return.

Body and Leg: DEX VIT RES and sockets.

Gems: Diamonds! This early on you’re gonna need diamonds on your body and leg sockets. Diamonds give +ALLRES which gives a ton of survivability early on. You can use Amethysts or Diamonds on helm for Life% and CDR respectively.

Hire Templar! Get all the skills on the left side for that “free” Hatred and heals.

Fixing your gear and getting those stats mentioned above will “Vault” you farther
and faster than just blindly waiting for legendary upgrades!

Customize Skill Bindings

If you’re not allowed to put two skills on your bar because they’re from the same category – FEAR NOT! This isn’t a bug or a permanent in-game restriction. You simply have to CHECK ON ELECTIVE MODE, via Esc > Options > Gameplay > Elective Mode!

Binding Force Move to Mouse wheel up & down is a value change that every player should make IMO. It prevents misclicks and skill misfires, and forces you to move to where otherwise an enemy might be.

Multishot Arsenal
Preparation Punishment
Companion Bat
Sentry Spitfire Turret

Cull the Weak Thrill of the Hunt
Ballistics Blood Vengeance

Hard Difficultyyou can easily finish Chapters 1, 2, and maybe even 3, if you stick to this difficulty. Only increase if needed (complete a neph on Expert).

Are you “lazy” like me?! Certain entries in the season journey can be completed in one pass. Just do one complete round of bounties (for Chapter 1) and the Acts 1-5 bounty cache entries (Chapter 3) will also be ticked off. If you’re lucky enough, you can also tag the bosses needed. Better do this when you’re level 60+. Got a bounty in Ruins of Sescheron? Why not visit the 2nd floor (Elder Sanctum) and look for the Kanai’s Cube. You should be getting your first set of Haedrig’s gift in no time!

The first 2 Chapters of the Season Journey is so easy to complete. I don’t think you will experience any problems here…

Keep the setting up tab in mind – you might just scrap what, otherwise, might be the yellow that pushes you to new heights of power!

Seasonal Journey Chapter 3: Getting the 4 piece

This tab: If you’ve gotten 2 pieces of the free set, going for 4.

S16 DH Natalya’s 2-piece Build
Skill Rune
Evasive Fire Focus
Strafe Drifting Shadow
Companion Bat
Smoke Screen Displacement (open)
Preparation Punishment
Rain of Vengeance Shade
Blood Vengeance (Semi-open) Thrill of the Hunt
Leech Cull the Weak

Why use the Shade rune? Man… I experimented with non-Shade runes thinking Shade is only good for high-end GR. Sadly, I discovered Shade is just damn good anywhere. The AoE is MASSIVE and it simply deals damage “faster” than the physical. Stick with it.

There are only two “meaningful” entries here. Completing all bounties, and one Neph on Master. If you haven’t done both… Get the bounties done first.

Difficulty: Although there are entries that need to be completed on Master, the rest of the entries can still be done on Hard. No point in making it difficult for us to progress to the next chapter – so always use the minimum difficulty asked.

Beat the following on Master difficulty

  • Nephalem Rift
  • Kill Rakanoth – Act IV, Gardens of Hope 1st Tier
  • Kill Zoltun Kulle – Act II, Archives of Zoltun Kulle (but access thru Desolate Sands)

Get this chapter done so we can finally complete Natalya’s Vengeance free set.

Seasonal Journey Chapter 4: Getting the 6 piece

This tab: If you’ve gotten 4 pieces of the free set, going for 6.

S16 DH Natalya’s 4-piece Build
Skill Rune
Evasive Fire Focus
Strafe Drifting Shadow
Companion (Open) Bat
Smoke Screen Displacement
Preparation (Open) Punishment
Rain of Vengeance Shade
Blood Vengeance (Night Stalker) Thrill of the Hunt
Leech Cull the Weak

There’s no changes in the build from a 2-piece to a 4-piece set. Companion and Preparation are “open skills”, but provide a huge safety net for learning the build. By simply using Night Stalker passive, experienced Nat’s users can keep Hatred at 100%! But there isn’t much else you want YET anyway so they can stay unless you’re confident to replace ’em.

Before we attempt our luck with GR20, let us finish off this chapter’s other entries and maybe fix up our gear a bit before we go in there solo.

Chapter 4 Entries:

Jewelcrafting Recipes: most of these drops from bounty cache but if you find yourself lacking a couple of recipes, you can go buy some from Squirt the Peddler in Act II, Hidden Camp.

Upgrade a Rare to Legendary w/ Kanai’s Cube: Try upgrading a 1H Crossbow, and hope for Dawn to materialize. Fortress Ballista wouldn’t be so bad, either. There’s actually a lot of good crossbows for Natalya’s Build.

Complete a Torment I Rift: This season journey entry should be easy enough especially if you follow the build and stat recommendations above.

Set Difficulty to Torment II: Defeat Skeleton King in Act II, The Royal Crypts

Set Difficulty to Torment IV: we have a bunch of things to do here…

You will notice a huge spike in enemy power at Torment IV! Adjust accordingly!

  • Kill Cydaea – Act III, Tower of the Cursed Level 1
  • Kill Odeg the Keywarden – Act I, Fields of Misery
  • Kill Sokahr the Keywarden – Act II, Dahlgur Oasis
  • Kill Xah’Rith the Keywarden – Act III, Stonefort
  • Kill Nekarat the Keywarden – Act IV, Garden of Hope 2nd Tier
  • Keywardens maps have a key icon next to the waypoint. Purple arrows point you to their location after a short while once you’re in their respective map.

Once you’re done with all these entries, you can now focus on beating GR20 Solo. Check the next clicky for the recommended build. But before anything else, make sure that GR20 is already unlocked for you. If not, just do the highest GRs you can to unlock.

>>> NATS 4 GR20 VIDEO HERE <<<

Remember the setup tab above? Those “good yellows” will go a long way here. Seriously. For a “reference”, here were my stats and what I tested with:

  • Offense (sheet): 275K
  • Toughness (sheet): 7.9M
  • Recovery (sheet): 600K
  • Dex: 7000
  • NO ‘special’ legendaries aside from the Natalya’s 4-piece set.
  • NO Pylons taken.
  • NO Legendary Gems.
  • NO Cubes powers used.
  • Remaining Time: 4~ MINUTES!

Sadly, we have to drop Companion-Bat from the build.

Surviving is a real pain so please play carefully – multiple deaths are your only risk here since you have more than enough damage to squeeze out a comfy timer. If you’re greedy and die 20 times? Nothing’s gonna save you from that. TRY TO DRAG ELITES TO CLUMPS: While it’s not so noticeable now, Natalya’s weakness is its pathetic single target damage. So try to drag elites along and keep moving!!!

The key to any GR20 run is SELF-HEALING. Leech does it wonderfully but don’t be shy to stack more! Amethyst on weapon is a good fallback.

RESULTS MAY VARY on how well you manage the build! Not even kidding, the difference is huge. I sincerely hope for the best and there’s no shame in running a few practice nephs!

Offense numbers DO NOT take into consideration most Legendary Powers and Gems. But since I did it RAW – these will serve as a great estimation. It felt like I couldn’t lose, but I felt extremely squishy – this clear is ALL ABOUT DEFENSE AND SAFETY.

you can “try” other spenders: Elemental Arrow.

Ultimately, I know MOST DH’s will move away from Nats and go into a UE Speedfarm build (which is smart. It’s great for farming – something we need to do a lot of).
So do what you can to reduce your own pain.

Speaking of pain reduction, I hate to mention it again, BEAT MALTHAEL AND CRAFT REAPER’S WRAPS. It’s going to make your life much much easier.

So, what now?

Torment VIthe minimum torment to farm. You can, of course go higher. The only thing that would hinder you is how well you handle the build. Natalya’s has too many variables for me to tell you where exactly you should be farming. Just remember not to take more than 10 minutes in a Neph.

A quick review before proceeding…

Keep these important things in mind as you progress!

Non-set pieces: Review

RINGS AND AMULET WITH SOCKET: Legendary gems are coming up!

Shoulders and Chest with RoV%. Natalya’s set doesn’t come with shoulders, you should then be on the lookout for a good shoulder piece. Craft and/or reroll if you have to.

Bracers and amulet with Lightning%. You will see your damage exponentially go up!

Belt: stack it up with defense with these stats: DEX VIT RES LIFE%

Sockets: get these on both jewelries and body armor! Sockets in amulet and rings is in preparation for socketing legendary gems. Diamonds on body slots.

Templar. Make sure he’s following you! The resource regen he gives you is most welcomed.

Fixing your gear will vastly improve your game. Re-roll those stats that won’t help you in any way. Don’t let sucky gear stats hold you back from progressing.

Gaining Power!

Now we have to gain as much power, as quickly as possible. The first place to look is Legendary Gems, as well as keeping an eye out for critical items.

Legendary Gems

This is the easiest way to gain power simply because acquiring them has little to no RNG. Getting 3 of your best gems will increase your power dramatically in a short time span.

Click on the tabs to see Natalya’s Vengeance “Big 3” gems, and “others”.

DH Natalya's 6 Fresh 70: Big 3 GemsOther gems?

Get these two to L25 ASAPTaegukPowerful

Taeguk: Any build that channels will want Taeguk. It scales extremely well for each point invested and even gives armor – pure value. Invest as many points as you want!

Bane of the Powerful: Is probably up next to help you out with your elite killing needs. You only need Level 25 on it!

Third gem? Esoteric if you’re dying, Trapped otherwise.

Esoteric Alteration: Since you use Leech and self-heal a lot, the only problem is BURST DAMAGE. Getting bursted down while you have a leveled Esoteric is very unlikely.

Bane of the Trapped: Is easily triggered with Thrill of the Hunt, making that passive worth its weight in gold, as it protects you by giving a massive slow to the bad guys.

Any other gems worth it?

Bane of the Stricken: Will be used in LATE GAME GR’ing, replacing either Trapped or Powerful. There is never a downside owning a high level Stricken – this is MANDATORY for high-end GR.

Esoteric Alteration: is the lategame defensive gem of choice.

Boon of the Hoarder: You need this for speedfarming.
(See: Speedfarming General, Demon Hunter Speedfarming Primer, Best DH Speedfarming)

Aside from these 5 gems listed in these tabs, any other gem is considerably worse.

Just get them asap while slowly climbing the GR’s you’re allowed to do. Do neph/GR/neph/GR etc until you get the big 3. Don’t overdo the level, just go for efficient farming and cheap empowering. GR 34 is enough to 25 a gem.

With 3 of your best gems at L25 – try much higher Torment levels (VIII at least). So now the real farming begins! From here on, obliterating elites is still the game plan. You’ll still face problems with mobs, and you might need to put a little mind on defense, too.

Playing the Build & Adjustments

Here’s some really basic tips for playing Natalya’s to help you as you progress into higher difficulties. It’s by no means comprehensive, but still helpful.

Playing Natalya's 6 - BasicsOffense & ResourceDefense & HealingSpeed & Mobility

“Oh boy”

Natalya’s Vengeance is one of the most mechanically complex builds out there. Again, the idea is to weave your Evasive Fires while Strafing… there’s a very rhythmic timing to it! This causes the “Reduce cooldown” to happen a little more often AND allows you to “infinitely Strafe” – sounds easy, right? NO.

“Everyone has their own way”

Do your research here and outside this site. There’s a bunch of resources out there about how to do this properly and suggested keybinds but ULTIMATELY you will find your own way!

Now for in-game non-mechanical strategy! ELITES ARE A PAIN IN THE ASS and you should drag them over to clumps, as I’ve mentioned earlier. From a strategic perspective, Nat’s is quite simple… AOE AS MANY GUYS AS YOU CAN – Nat’s has a very satisfying “meat grinder-esque” gameplay if done right. Keep ’em comin’!

Fan of Knives is for the final build… only use it when you get Lord Greenstone’s Fan (preferably with CoE!) – it’s purpose becomes VERY, VERY clear as you play… This combo is used to help out vs Elites! “RoV and move while FoK elites every 30s”.

More offense or Hatred /Discipline needed?

Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.

Any Resource Gain skill or passive that isn’t Vengeance-Seethe or Night Stalker should be seen as TEMPORARY! You can also change your build to allow infinite Strafe while SPEED FARMING, but strictly speaking, the build doesn’t need any of it.

Vengeance-Seethe isn’t included in the base build above since it’s not very consistent without Dawn. Just putting it here to remind you what you’re shooting for.

If I’m noooooooooot mistaken even Seethe was a filler for Dark Heart. If I remember correctly, you can keep the Aquila buff up even without Seethe!

Marked for Death is your best bet for a damage boost to replace one of your skills.

Passives are slim. Nat’s makes use of many Passives and DH isn’t known for great DPS passives. Ambush is the best one, the others are too unreliable.

More defense needed?

Defense is usually categorized in either Toughness or Self-healing capability.

Leech is listed in the main build since it’s a GODLIKE PASSIVE. I’m not kidding man! A lot of people overlooked Leech for a long time, but this is the real deal.

Passives? Numbing Traps and, eventually, Awareness would be my next bet. Both are great defensives, if you can fit them.

Aside from this, there is probably ZERO practical toughness increases. I’m really not kidding with Leech – it’s worth it.

More mobility needed?

Smokescreen-Displacement is recommended in the base build for its speedfarmy capabilities. Sadly, Discipline is really hard to come by…

Tactical Advantage is your one stop shop for increased clear times. It stacks with Displacement, but I like to think of this as “giving Displacement rune to Special Recipe”.

Any other changes for speed at this point is too greedy and I can’t recommend it.(See: Speedfarming GeneralDemon Hunter SpeedfarmingDH Fastest Speedfarming)

Items to look for

Okay, now that the easy part of powering up is done, it’s time for the farmy bit. Here, I will be listing all the high-impact items you can pick up and how to get them (aside from drops).

Crafting a Reaper’s Wraps (drops from any Torment Malthael) is a great early boost, especially for an early game Nat’s Build which heavily relies on holding down a channeled skill. You can free up “some” (or one) resource related skill or passive with this!

Blood ShardsDeaths BreathThe Classics

Using Blood Shards:

Belt seems to be the best bang for buck here. The real prize is Crashing Rain. While I not only love the name of the item, its effects are downright obscene! 4000% bonus damage! There’s also a ton of good defensive fillers a la Goldwrap or String of Ears.

Shoulders would be next since there’s no Nat’s shoulder. Mantle of Channeling is a shoo-in and gives you damage and defense. Sadly, there’s no other random filler in this slot.

Bracers are good. Wraps of Clarity is the payoff in this pile but Nemesis is welcome, too.

Body comes last – and hopefully you’re a pro at this point… Because it’s Aquila Cuirass we’re lookin’ for! You know you’ve made it with Nat’s if the buff never drops!

Legs has a decent filler in Hexing Pants – a super good cube option for speedier runs.

I might as well remind you here to do bounties for:
Ring of Royal Grandeur: Act I bounties, to fit all our greed. (which you won’t need this season)
Avarice: Act III bounties, for speedfarming.

Using Death’s Breath – Rare to legendary:

Upgrading 1H Crossbows for Dawn is the ULTRA find. Dawn allows us to use Vengeance-Seethe in one of our open skill slots. It’s a massive jump in power. Thankfully, there are other fillers you can find here like Fortress BallistaCalamity

Once you find Dawn, you can easily switch to Multishot farming builds…

Past this you need to upgrade Daggers for Lord Greenstone’s Fan. This adds a whole DIMENSION of power. I’m not even kidding… this is the final nail in the coffin. It may seem janky but once you get used to this, + CoE, it’s absolute insanity.

However, this evolution is more on the ‘tryhard’ end.
Most people will be well on their way to UE Multishot at this point.

The Classics: Good for any type of newer character, and even the most battle-hardened of builds.

Ring of Royal Grandeur: “Break” your 6-piece to make space for a good filler item! tis the season of grandeur!

Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac: Infinite Resource with Preparation-PunishmentVengeance… a great “filler” ring that can allow you to “cheat” past proper gear rolls on CDR.

Reaper’s Wraps: Not so relevant on DH but can free up a passive slot (Blood Vengeance). Kill Malthael for the plans – and craft it! A legit early boost with no RNG reliance.

Accessory SetsFocusRestraint or Traveler’s Pledge. Completing any of these 2-sets is a vast power jump. +100%++ is substantial for only 2 slots.

Convention of Elements: Good ‘ol CoE. Wear it, Kanai it, as a filler or till the end of time. Learning to maximize CoE in any build you choose is a turning point for higher GR’s.

Unity: Straight 50% damage reduction in the cube. Too bad you need two of ’em.

Goldwrap + Avarice + Boon of The Hoarder: I don’t care how many times I have to remind you about this combo. Be on the lookout. Avarice drops from ACT III bounties.

Bridging to the End-game

So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first.

  1. Meticulous Bolts is no longer in game, it has been replaced by Augustine’s Panacea. Other than that great site and great guides, I am feeling a sudden urge to remake sevral of my toons when ever I see the guides here.

  2. Hi, I’m getting piece 3 and 4 from “The Shadow Mantle” set. I’m using 1H sword in weapon slot 1 and slot 2 (off-hand), I can’t use anything (because all 1H). Since we need Karlei’s Point and Dawn later on. We should able to use dagger or sword/crossbow (both 1H) together. Why I can’t do it now. Did I overlook something ?

  3. Holy wow. I stalled at Expert level because I didn’t understand the 2 set bonus. I went from weakling to god in a few steps by reading this. I owe you one.

  4. I was lucky to find “Thunderfury…” leg sword early in season, so when I extracted its Kanai power, it became a nice step to making Impale more anti-group oriented than before 🙂 that lightning damage

  5. Is there something missing(/wrong) in “Items to look for” (” [/su_tabs] “)? Usually there’s Blood Shards, Death’s Breath and classic section. Cheers for the guides anyway!

  6. So i have killed the Keywarden over and over and have killed Urzael over and over im not getting any credit in the season jerny at all im on the right difficulty and everything. wtf?!
