Just got to Fresh 70 Demon Hunter? Good job! But the farming begins now! Your goal is to get your FREE SET ASAP. In this guide, you’ll learn the best setup for every step of progression (2/4/6 set, and beyond!).
In S6, the Demon Hunter free set is Embodiment of the Marauder.
Click below to reveal the builds you need for each step: (Given how powerful Marauder is and how similar the build is to basic Fresh 70, there won’t be much changes in between…)
Since it wont fit in the boxes above, putting the video of GR20 here:
|Marauder 6 Fresh 70 Demon Hunter|
|Multishot (Chakram)||Arsenal (Razor Disk)|
|Sentry||Spitfire Turret (Any)|
|Companion||ALL in effect|
|Thrill of the Hunt (Open)||Blood Veneance|
|Custom Engineering||Ballistics (If Multishot)|
Multishot-Arsenal is my chosen skill for early M6 – my guidelines will refer to that.
But Marauder does come with some problems. Mainly “Muh Sentries aren’t shooting the same guys I am!“. Know this – Never let your 3 Sentries be on cooldown. So the moment your third Sentry is available – use it. Why?
Sentries increase YOUR damage. Your speed of killing things means you’ll inevitably ditch your Sentries. But that’s OK as long as YOU are buffed. If you try too hard to gain value from Sentries shooting enemies – you’ll end up losing value.
Here’s a priority:
- Always have 3 (or max) Sentries out to buff YOU. No excuses.
- Add Sentries in the mix when fighting huge packs or elites.
- Spacing out Sentry casts means you’ll never have to dump Hatred all at once. Spaced casts mean a more fluid playstyle. Casting 3 at once means you’ll have to cast 3 at once some time down the line…
There it is. That’s how you play M6 right there. Of course there’s such cheeses as placing sentries across ravines, on ledges and other skullduggery that you’ll learn along the way.
Sentry-Polar Station is the late-game choice due to CC. This comes with another mini skill-set in Sentry placement to protect yourself and CC mobs most efficiently. (Chokepoints, cast on self as a “slow shield” etc).
Companion has many effects when you press it. Wolf and Bat are the main effects you’re after. Luckily, pressing it when you’re about to kill elites is some pretty good value. Last I heard, Hatred+ and DMG+ for one button is value.
As you progress and get items, your build may have a weak point here and there that you can patch up given the simple skill, rune, and passive changes listed below.
Offense is usually categorized in Damage or, indirectly, Resource Gain.
Okay so, Marauder 6, especially in this stage of the game… You’ve noticed that you have no problem killing. Were “practically maxed” on offense…
Vengeance and Marked for Death are the only other practical offensive skills you can add to the build. Of the two mentioned, we will be using Vengeance once we get Dawn.
There’s a lot you can do regarding offensive passives, but I guess the best to mention are: Ambush > Cull the Weak (+Thrill of the Hunt if needed) > Steady Aim > Archery
As a reminder, Custom Engineering should NEVER BE REMOVED as it single handedly obliterates any offensive passive choice.
This segment is a little thin… again, there’s not much to be said regarding offense.
How about Hatred generation? We use Companion (which automatically gets Bat), and Preparation – Punishment. Blood Vengeance is also an option. ALL OF WHICH are suggested in the base build.
The only other resource build adjustment I’d consider is Night Stalker.
Defense is usually categorized in either Toughness or Self-healing capability.
Leech is a godlike passive in any point of the game to get sick healing. This passive is not a joke – if healing is your problem this right there is the SOLUTION.
Sentry – Polar Station is deceptively powerful. The slow field decreases your damage taken by allowing easier kiting! In 99% of cases, during solo play, it is better than Guardian Turret. It also triggers Bane of the Trapped. Thrill of the Hunt is similar. These permanent Slow is a large indirect boost to survivability.
Numbing Traps is a legit choice if you’re in desperate need of survivability.
Other options seem subpar – Demon Hunters aren’t known for built-in defenses, and Marauder is the only DH set with zero defensive set bonuses.
This early on, Mobility and Speed shouldn’t be the focus of your build. It’s a luxury for a Fresh 70 Demon Hunter. Anyways…
Given how tight the build is, and how the current setup looks – most of the build changes you’ll be doing will be tied in to legendaries you pick up. M6 is extremely strong on its own and you won’t be in the pile that struggles after getting their free set.
Re-roll yellows. Yes, you heard me. A lot of guys don’t do this and it baffles me. Having decent yellows will easily bump you up one or two torments, no joke. Have at the very least DEX + VIT on all of ’em!
Skill% can be found on boots and helm. Since we usually want Crit on helm, try getting it on boots! It’s a large gain for a single re-roll.
Element% FIRE is used in this build. Make temporary yellow amulet+bracer with Fire%. However, late-game likely won’t be using fire so don’t “ruin” good legendaries just to get fire% on both amulet and bracer. up to 30+% gains for two re-rolls.
Sentry%? Is less likely to be useful in neph or speeds, but it’s a welcome boost. Found on Shoulders and Chest.
Resource Cost Reduction (RCR): IS AMAZING with early M6. Making good yellow: Rings, Quiver, Mainhand can get you quite a chunk of RCR.
Just make good yellows in general: Avoiding trash stats like Armor, Life per Second and such. Just generally keeping an eye out for better yellows and FIXING them make a massive difference in the early game. The cost is so tiny, so do it!
Hire Templar if you haven’t. His lower left-most skill gives you some Hatred gains.
From here on you’ll want to get stronger through a variety of means. Gathering resources thru Nephs, Bounties and GR’s.
Unlocking Kanai’s Cube
If you haven’t done so – do it now. Three extra legendary powers are no joke and it’s a very low impact way to increase your efficiency.
Get them NOW! They are an amazing boost of power without relying on RNG.
Zei’s Stone of Vengeance is “set it and forget it”. It has no pre-req aside from distance, and even stuns guys. Amazing for any ranged character.
Bane of the Powerful is another great gem that you don’t even need to level up a lot. (Keep it at minimum half of your other gems). The low investment and massive power make this a great early gem. It also provides defense vs. annoying elites!
Bane of the Trapped is powerful, but requires some build changes to trigger it. Either you use Thrill of the Hunt for brainless activation, or use Sentry-Polar Station as that’s the popular late-game choice.
The above three will be your main gems for a while. There are some others worth leveling up, too:
Wreath of Lightning is one of those speedfarmy gems everyone is happy to own. Since marauders comes with a DMG%+ this gem can even do actual damage. Ultimately it is used in speedy applications and owning a 25 Wreath should be in everyone’s repertoire.
Items to look for
Since you already have your 6 set you just need to patch up the odds and ends…
Quivers: A bunch of quivers, ALONE, will rocket your DPS! Quivers are also OK to use Death’s Breaths on, but let’s talk about it here in Blood Shards. Speaking of quivers, one stands above all else for the Marauder set: Bombardier’s Rucksack.
- Bombardier’s Rucksack: Up to 100% Sentry damage, and you can have TWO more active. That translates to an unspeakably huge DPS increase!
- along the way you’ll find fillers like Deadman’s Legacy, Augustine’s Panacea…
TL;DR: Manticore WITH OR WITHOUT the free set, MANTICORE is the single most powerful weapon a DH can find. In ONE slot you get both RESOURCE COST REDUCTION and POWER for one of the most powerful skills (Cluster Arrow). Upgrade 2H Crossbows FIRST!
Ring of Royal Grandeur: Makes your journey one piece shorter. Always good to have. These drop from ACT I bounties. It’s even part of many end-game setups!
Unity: Straight 50% damage reduction in the cube. Too bad you need two of ’em.
So you skipped a whole chunk of the powering up phase with the free set. Now what? Like I always say, “Speedfarming first before pushing GR’s”. So, convert what you have NOW to be as speedfarmy as possible, first. (It’s not a surprise many DH’s will convert to any other set from this one…)***
